Lycée français René Cassin Oslo is a French AEFE day school in the centre of the city — an official French week from maternelle through Terminale, not an English-medium IB corridor. Official site lfo.no. The home page says the house has been here since 1961, schools more than 650 pupils, and is approved by the AEFE and the Norwegian ministry of education. Treat the pupil count as the school’s own snapshot.

It is not Oslo International School in Bekkestua, and not Deutsch-Norwegische Schule Oslo on the Akerselva. Three official climates. Three papers. One capital.

It is a day school. There is no boarding house.

The useful questions are: Do you want the Baccalauréat, not the IB? Can this child sit a French-language week, including the language test from CP? And have you asked whether your invoice is the local rate or the company rate — because the 2026–27 regulation applies the company fee automatically unless the family can prove there is no employer cover.

Who it is for

Families who want a French national path in Oslo, from age 3, and who can live with two central gates rather than a Bærum commute.

Maternelle, the school says, is open to children who do not yet speak French. The inscriptions page is warmer: children who arrive without French “learn this language in a few months.” From CP to Terminale the door is stricter. Élémentaire and secondaire are open to any pupil with the will and the level to follow teaching in French, subject to passing a language test in élémentaire. We will not invent the paper or the pass mark.

It will not suit a family hunting an English IB week in Bekkestua, or a German-Norwegian double diploma on Myra. Walk those houses if that is the climate. Walk the municipal grunnskole your address already names if the public yard is allowed to be first.

The home page’s “excellence” line is the school’s marketing sentence. We are not ranking LFO against OIS.

The campus you can actually picture

Two official addresses. Ask which gate this child uses.

Skovveien 9, 0257 Oslo — Frogner, near the palace park. The contact page puts 6e, 5e, 4e and 3e here. A maternelle open-day note prints the same street (with postcode 0157 on that one page — confirm the live lodge sign). Pupil entry, the contact page says, is the portal at Oscars gate and Colbjørnsens gate, not whichever gate looks prettier on the map.

Vulkan 11, 0178 Oslo — the contact page puts 3e, 2nde, 1ère and Terminale here. 3e sits on both lists. Ask which building this fourteen-year-old actually stands in.

Time Skovveien at 7:40 in January, then Vulkan, then Gamle Ringeriksvei in Bekkestua. They are not one commute.

How the years are organised

French years: maternelle from 3 through Terminale. Norwegian and English from the early years, the home page says; German or Spanish from collège. The leaving papers the school names are the Diplôme National du Brevet and the Baccalauréat.

Maternelle is a Norwegian barnehage story as well as a French one. Fees follow Parliament’s makspris. Families must also register on oslo.kommune.no. Daycare during school hours is included: 07:45 until class, then 14:45–16:40 (the afternoon window may move the day before a holiday). Vacation holding exists for up to 46 weeks; families register by the email deadline. Late pickup: 150 NOK per quarter-hour per child.

The inscriptions page is blunt about Norwegian rights. The school is recognised under the Education Act §2-12, but the current homologation does not give pupils the rights in Article 5 and Article 7 — PPT follow-up and transport. Ask what that means for this child before you assume a free bus or a municipal support package.

How a child actually gets in

Eduka, all year, for CP through Terminale. Application fee 3,000 NOK, paid on the platform — PayPal required, the inscriptions page says. The fee does not guarantee a place and is not refundable. It is due again if the family reapplies.

Admission fees, once a place is offered: 2,000 NOK for a new pupil from CP to Terminale, due within 15 days of the invoice. Miss that and the school may cancel the place. Pupils already in LFO maternelle Grande Section in 2025/26 pay 5,000 NOK when they enter CP, billed in September, not refundable. A former pupil returning after 10 months pays admission again.

A security deposit of 2,600 NOK is due once a place is attributed, maternelle through Terminale. Refund only if the payer asks in writing, within three years of leaving, and only after every invoice is settled. No interest.

Re-enrolment is automatic on Eduka. Withdrawal needs three months’ notice, from the month after the school receives the written letter. End-of-year withdrawal must arrive by 31 March; later than that, the three-month notice can run into the next school year and be invoiced at the next level — with a special 3ème/lycée rule printed in the regulation. For several siblings, the notice invoice is for one child, at the highest level. Read §3.5 before you assume August is free.

Maternelle 2026–27 inscriptions opened on Eduka from 2 February 2026. The commune’s kindergarten date the school names is 1 March. The school still receives pupils through the year if the posting does not match the calendar. The child must be out of nappies. Children who turn 3 between August and December may start at the August rentrée.

We will not invent a waitlist length.

Money, as the 2026–27 regulation prints it

Adopted by the Conseil d’Administration on 21 January 2026. The English PDF is on the site; the French version prevails if the two disagree. Tuition is billed in five instalments — September, November, January, March, May — each covering two months. Not a monthly invoice. Norwegian payments: DNB 7877.08.28502 with a KID. From abroad: IBAN NO0878770828502, BIC DNBANOKKXXX. AVTALEGIRO covers those five tuition invoices only.

Local versus company. Any family that can prove it receives no direct or indirect employer compensation for school fees may ask for the local rate after the file is reviewed. Without that proof, the company rate is applied automatically to a new pupil. A false declaration, the regulation says, lets the school refuse or withdraw the place.

Lycée is not a rounding error on collège. Ask which column your employer actually sits in before you budget the Bekkestua comparison.

Maternelle follows makspris: 1,200 NOK per month as of 1 January 2026, and the regulation says the figure may move. Oslo sibling discounts (søskenmoderasjon) and income reductions are municipal rules. Two children in kindergarten: 30% off the younger. Three or more: 100% off the youngest and 30% off the second. The family has to tell the school, and also finish the kommune forms.

Study hall, CP–CM2, annual 2026/27: 27,000 NOK for CP–CE2 (Oslo municipality covers it after registration); 21,100 NOK for CM1–CM2. A one-off hour is 300 NOK, including for unregistered CP–CE2 children left after class.

Exam rights the regulation prints: Brevet 750 NOK; épreuve anticipée of French in 1ère 1,500 NOK; Bac 3,500 NOK. Independent-candidate lines are higher. CNED specialties the school does not offer stay with the family, with one printed exception if LFO drops a specialty between 1ère and Terminale.

French-nationality pupils may apply for AEFE scholarships through the Embassy. Fees stay due in full until Paris decides. Lycée pupils whose guardians are taxed in Norway and are EEA nationals may look at Lånekassen — the school sends forms; the family files.

A paper invoice copy, or a payment certificate, is 600 NOK. Temporary absence does not pause tuition.

What we are not claiming

We are not ranking LFO against OIS or DENOSO. We are not inventing a waitlist, a language-test score, or a 2027 makspris. We are not calling Vulkan a Bekkestua campus. We are not treating “100% baccalauréat” home-page news as a league table we built. We are not giving CP–Terminale pupils municipal transport rights the school says it does not have.

Stairs questions

Ask whether this invoice will be local or company. Ask which site this child stands in next September — Skovveien or Vulkan — and where 3e actually sits. Ask how much Norwegian a shy eight-year-old really has by the second spring. Ask what §2-12 without Article 5 and 7 means for support and the school run. Time both central streets on a dark Tuesday, then Bekkestua, in the same week.
