St. Gilgen is a village on the Wolfgangsee, in the Salzburg-Umgebung district of the state of Salzburg, on the road between Salzburg and Bad Ischl. It is a small lake community in the Salzkammergut, not a suburb of Salzburg. That shapes the school decision: a family can live beside an international school here, but most other options, including Salzburg’s international and bilingual schools, are a bus journey away.
Getting there: bus, not train
St. Gilgen has no railway station. The main public-transport link is bus line 150 between Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and Bad Ischl. From mid-September 2026, the state of Salzburg added peak-time journeys, giving up to four buses an hour between Salzburg and St. Gilgen at the busiest times. An express variant, 150X, links St. Gilgen, Strobl and Bad Ischl. Check current times with Salzburg Verkehr, as the timetable is due to change again.
St. Gilgen International School estimates Salzburg Airport at about 35 minutes by road. For boarders, ask how transfers to Salzburg Airport or Salzburg Hauptbahnhof are organised at the start and end of term. For day families, living in St. Gilgen itself makes the school run trivial; living in Salzburg and commuting out is possible by bus, but test it at school times.
Living here: the Austrian school system
Austrian compulsory schooling starts on 1 September after a child’s sixth birthday and lasts nine years. The structure is:
- Volksschule (primary school), years 1–4, usually ages 6–10;
- then either Mittelschule or the lower level of an academic secondary school (AHS, the Gymnasium), years 5–8;
- year 9 at a pre-vocational school, the upper level of an AHS, or a vocational school or college.
Public schools generally teach in German. The upper AHS leads to the Matura, Austria’s university-entrance qualification. A child arriving without German may need language support and a careful grade placement; certificates translated into German or English help with placement, according to the same government page.
Ask the municipality and the Bildungsdirektion Salzburg which primary school serves your address, and which Mittelschule and AHS options your child could realistically reach by bus. Choose the local route if you expect to stay in Austria and your child can build academic German. It is especially natural at primary age.
The international school in the village
St. Gilgen International School (StGIS) is an English-medium IB day and boarding school on the lake. It suits a pupil who needs English-medium teaching and the IB, from Grade 4 as a day pupil or from Grade 7 as a boarder, and a family who wants that in a village rather than a city. Our profile covers programmes, admissions and 2026–27 fees.

- SALIS: a public bilingual Gymnasium whose upper years can lead to both the Austrian Matura and the IB Diploma. It suits a family who will live in Salzburg and wants a state route with an international dimension.
