Progressive, alternative, and the school that only sounds like one

Parents reach for progressive when they mean: smaller, kinder, less of a corridor, more of a workshop. The word does not mean that on its own.

In Europe it can mean a recognised Montessori or Steiner/Waldorf house, a Freinet or democratic school, a church workshop with a particular pedagogy, or an IB campus that put “inquiry-led” on a slide and still sits a very ordinary exam.

This page will not invent a named school we have not sourced. It will give you a way to tell the climates apart, and the questions that make a tour useful. If a house is on this site as a portrait, we will link it. If it is not, you still have a fridge list.

Four climates, not one mood

A recognised pedagogy. Montessori, Steiner/Waldorf, Freinet: there is usually an association, an inspection flavour, a training the teachers name. The morning looks different on purpose — mixed ages, a long work cycle, no grades until late, a festival calendar. Ask which association, and what the last visit asked them to improve.

A national alternative. Germany’s Ersatzschule with a reform pedagogy, a Nordic Steiner school with a parental fee, a Czech soukromá that is more workshop than corridor. These sit beside the public system, not above it. Recognition matters if you might later need a gymnázium, a lukio, or a return to the neighbourhood school.

A Hahn / outdoor / boarding character house. Schule Schloss Salem and Aiglon College come from a Kurt Hahn thread: service, expeditions, a boarding corridor, a seriousness about the outdoor day. That is not Montessori. It is not “the child follows their bliss.” It is a particular idea of an adult after 9 p.m. Read the portraits. Do not file them under progressive because the mountain is pretty.

An IB campus with workshop language. Inquiry, agency, learner profile. Those words can describe a real seminar. They can also describe a corridor that still ranks, sets, and panics in April. The curriculum decoder is the alphabet. The tour is whether a shy child may take twenty minutes.

The question that settles it

What happens when this child needs drill?

A good workshop can still teach phonics, times tables, a verb table, a lab report. A slide that only says “the child is ready when they are ready” is not a reading scheme. Ask to see the Year 3 book, not the sand tray in reception.

Who is awake if the workshop does not hold them?

A named adult, a learning-support hour, a willingness to say “we are not the right house.” Pride that includes unfinished work is usually the trustworthy kind.

What does sixteen sit?

Some alternative houses join a national exam late and do it well. Some offer the IB after a childhood that never met a timed paper. Some leave you, in January of the final year, discovering that the university office wanted a different key. Write the leaving certificate on the fridge before you fall in love with the woodwork room.

Host country, still

A Steiner yard in Helsinki and a Steiner yard in Stuttgart do not share a Tuesday just because they share a founder. Language, inspection, and the public school next door are the climate.

If you might stay, ask how a child returns to the municipal school, and whether the host language is a subject or a hope. The language of the yard is that test.

If you will leave, ask how a mid-year arrival from an ordinary international is placed, and whether Grade 10 still has a way into a portable diploma.

What to ask on the stairs

Ask which pedagogy they actually mean, and which association would recognise them this year. Ask what they changed after the last inspection or pedagogical visit.

Ask to see a classroom that is not the show one. Ask where a child who hates group work goes at 11 a.m. Ask how conflict is handled when the philosophy is kindness and the corridor is still a corridor.

Ask about fees the way you would anywhere else. Alternative is not a synonym for cheap, and it is not a synonym for bursary. How to read a fee schedule still applies. We will not invent a table for a house we have not read.

If two schools both feel possible — one workshop, one ordinary excellent corridor — that is a blessing. Children grow in more than one kind of soil. Choose the place where you can be a calmer parent at the gate.
