Salem publishes a 600-bed ceiling, two leaving exams, and a monthly boarding invoice. The 2026/27 PDF and the live admissions table are not the same document. Read the PDF that matches the entry year.

Schule Schloss Salem is a state-recognised Gymnasium with a boarding school on Lake Constance, founded in 1920 in the spirit of Kurt Hahn. The short profile says about 280 staff, students from over 45 nations, a published maximum of 600 boarding places, and that about 95% of pupils board. There are limited day and full-day places for families who already live nearby. Treat the 600 as a ceiling the school prints, not an occupancy we counted.
Three houses, by age. Schloss Salem (Schlossbezirk 1, 88682 Salem) holds grades 5–10. Schloss Spetzgart (Spetzgart 1, 88662 Überlingen) holds 10PLUS and grade 11. Campus Härlen (Kurt-Hahn-Str. 1, 88662 Überlingen) holds grade 12. A child does not stay in the same castle from 11 to 18. The move is part of the design.
Leaving paths: the Abitur in German, or the IB Diploma in English. From grade 8 the school runs International Classes — Baden-Württemberg content, taught in English — as preparation for that choice after grade 10. The IBO/KMK list records Salem as IB school 000622. CIS re-accredited the school in January 2025.
The useful questions are not “is it the famous German boarding school.” The useful questions are: Abitur or IB? Can this child live in a house of 14–20, with service and offices that are not optional? Can you pay the monthly figure and the extras the GTC bills separately? And have you opened the 2026/27 PDF, not only the live table, which already shows higher monthly rates for a later year?
The 2026/27 information sheet is blunt. Salem takes children who can meet both the classroom and the boarding standard, and who accept Hahn’s principles: lessons, plus obligatory service, guilds, sport. Students are expected to take offices and responsibility in the house.
Abitur applicants need fluent written and spoken German. International Classes and the IB need fluent written and spoken English. Entry is into grades 5–11. Grade 12 only in special cases. Mid-year entry is “not advisable” but possible in justified cases.
About 20% of pupils, the short profile says, are on a merit scholarship; the long-term aim is 30%. Basic scholarships are income-independent; they can be topped up with income-dependent partial awards. Applications run all year for the following school year. That is the school’s own figure, not a promise that your file is in the 20%.
Day and full-day places exist for children who live with their parents in the region. If you do not already live on the lake, do not budget as a day family. This is a boarding school that also has a day door.
A Cistercian monastery complex at Salem; a castle at Spetzgart; a purpose-built college campus at Härlen. Site plans are in the downloads. The short profile names an indoor pool at Schloss Salem, a school harbour on the lake with sailing boats and sea kayaks, hockey as the traditional sport, and 20 other sports. Music has instrumental teachers, bands, orchestra, choir. Theatre runs through the year; the IB offers Theatre Arts. Experiential education runs from hut hikes to multi-week trips to the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Round Square is a founding-member network; there are exchanges with more than 50 partner schools.
None of that tells you if a quiet 13-year-old will sleep in week one. It does tell you the school is a whole estate, not a converted hotel with a gym in the basement. Ask to see the actual boarding group, not only the cloister.
Boarding-group sizes, from the short profile:
Class sizes are 10 to 20. The teacher–student ratio is printed as 1 to 4. That last figure includes the boarding world, not only the timetable. Ask what it means on a Tuesday afternoon when the house is doing service.
Grades 5–7, Schloss Salem. Everyday languages are German and English. Grades 5–6 offer intensive German as a Foreign Language for non-native speakers. Grade 5 English, including for native speakers. From grade 6: Latin or French as the second foreign language. From grade 8: Spanish or French as a third language, or a science or music profile.
Grades 8–10 split. The German-medium Gymnasium continues toward the Abitur. The International Classes teach the Baden-Württemberg curriculum in English. The short profile says Salem is the only school in Germany to offer those international classes from grade 8. After grade 10, the choice is Abitur or IB — not a third invented diploma.
10PLUS is the Aufbaugymnasium at Spetzgart: a way into the upper school for pupils who did not grow up in this Gymnasium. There is a dedicated brochure in the downloads.
Grades 11–12. Spetzgart then Härlen. Abitur in eight Gymnasium years, or the two IB Diploma years. Democracy education is not a club: the school names its own constitution, a middle-school council, an upper-school parliament, and an office system. Three years of compulsory social service — fire brigade, Red Cross, technical relief, DLRG, social services — sit next to eight years of health education. If a child wants a boarding school that is only lessons and a weekend bus home, this is the wrong lake.
German and English are the daily languages. The rest of the menu is above. The hard sentence is still the admissions sheet: Abitur = German fluency; IB and International Classes = English fluency. A bilingual child can still be in the wrong stream. Placement tests exist; the admissions page names a visit or digital interview.
Mother-tongue maintenance beyond German and English is not described as a paid after-hours programme of the VIS kind. Ask what actually runs this year for your language. Do not assume a Saturday school lives in the cloister.

You apply into a year, not into a vague “international boarding.” Say Abitur, International Class, or IB on the form you actually mean. Grade 12 from nowhere is a special-case conversation; ask before you pay an admission fee.
The school is co-ed. Houses are organised by age across the three campuses, not as a single 5–12 corridor.

The live admissions table, on 31 August 2026, showed higher monthly boarding rates (€4,680 / €5,280 / €4,780 / €5,700). Those live figures sit next to 2027/28 PDFs. The numbers below are from the 2026/27 information sheet, valid as of 1 January 2026. If you are buying 2027/28, open that PDF. Do not mix the two.
Salem is a non-profit gGmbH. Baden-Württemberg contributes a portion of tuition under the Private Schools Act; parents pay the rest. The school-and-boarding fee (SBF / SIG) is set each year. Payment runs through 31 August, whatever the holiday date or the Abitur/IB exam date. Direct debit is mandatory for payments from Germany. Annual payers get a 1.5% discount on the SIG. Families may currently claim 30% of the schooling costs as extraordinary expenses on a German tax return; the school can certify the eligible share, and pastoral-care costs up to age 14. The deposit is refunded at the end of the contract. The administration surcharge is for integrating pupils from other school systems. Scholarship holders may have different arrangements.
Extras. The admissions page says incidental costs — individual music, exchanges, uniform, excursions — are about €200 a month, billed separately under the GTC. Check the “additional costs” example on the admissions pages. We are not turning “about €200” into a precise annual line.

A first-year IB boarder, paying annually, is not “about €60,000.” It is admission + administration + a year’s deposit + €59,400, then extras. A grade-7 Abitur boarder on the monthly plan posts a three-month deposit of €13,350 on top of €4,450 a month.

The Abitur is the Baden-Württemberg Gymnasium diploma, taught in German. If you might stay in Germany, or you want a document that German universities read without a translation argument, this is the path to test on a visit.
The IB Diploma is the English-medium portable one. Salem is on the KMK recognition list as school 000622. That list is about whether a German Land recognises the Diploma for university entrance, under the conditions the KMK sets. It is not an automatic “German Abitur equivalent you can take to another country as Abitur.” Ask the IB office to walk that with this child’s subjects.
International Classes are a middle-school on-ramp, not a leaving certificate.
The terms of admission say the child must be able to meet school and boarding requirements. Service, guilds and sport are obligatory. This is not a specialist SEN school on the pages we fetched. Bring the current reports. Ask whether the house and the classroom can staff what the child actually needs — and whether that still fits a group of 14–20.
Ask which castle this child would sleep in this September, and which one two years later. Ask Abitur or IB with the child’s stronger academic language on the table. Ask how many of the 600 beds are actually filled this term. Ask what the €200 extras looked like on last year’s invoice for a child in this grade. Ask how often a boarder goes home, and what a Sunday night is for a 12-year-old. Ask how scholarships are decided for this entry year, not the 30% goal. Ask to see a boarding group at supper, not only the nave.
If you might stay in Germany, ask the Abitur question twice: once for a German university, once for a later move. If you will leave, ask the IB office the KMK question with a pencil.
We are not saying Salem is the best boarding school in Germany. We are not guessing occupancy under the 600 ceiling. We are not mixing 2026/27 PDF rates with the higher live table. We are not printing day-school euros we did not extract. Accreditation: CIS in January 2025; IB 000622 on the KMK list; state recognition as a Gymnasium. Confirm the live cycle.

BerlinA Jesuit Gymnasium and ISS by the Tiergarten, not an IB campus in Brandenburg. The school prints a new Schulgeldordnung from 1 August 2026 and a promise that money will not be the gate. We will not invent the monthly line the public page does not quote.
FrankfurtThis is a Type 1 European School, not FIS in the Taunus. The leaving diploma is the European Baccalaureate. Category I staff children are fee-exempt. Category III pays the Board table and waits on a place.
Berlin is not one international campus. It is a public German-American school in Zehlendorf, an IB house over the Brandenburg line, and a Jesuit Gymnasium by the Tiergarten. Ask which paper, then time all three roads.
