European School Guide began as a simple wish: that the first thing a parent reads about schools in a new country would feel like a kind, well-travelled friend, not a spreadsheet wearing a blazer.

The search is tender even when it looks practical. You are choosing the rooms your child will grow up in. You are also choosing how Monday mornings will feel in your house. That deserves warmth, and it deserves accuracy.

What we are not

We are not a ranking. We are not a marketplace that sells the top slot to whoever waves first. We will not pretend that one “best school” exists, because children are not interchangeable and neither are families.

What we try to be

A bilingual, country-by-country companion. English for internationally mobile families. The local language for parents who already live there and should not have to think in a second tongue about something this close to the heart.

We explain how “private” changes meaning as you cross a border. We talk about calendars, entry points, and the questions that make a tour useful. We leave room for schools to tell the story of what they have been building — the orchestra that finally clicked, the kindness policy that is not a poster, the science lab that stayed open on a Thursday because a child was onto something.

A note on independence

When a school is mentioned, it is as an illustration of a landscape, not an endorsement. Always walk the corridors yourself. Always ask the children what lunch is like. They are the only ranking that has ever really mattered.

How we stay honest

We do not invent fees, league tables, waitlist lengths, or closing dates. School systems differ by region and they change. Where we describe a calendar, we speak in seasons and habits, then send you back to the school and the commune for this year’s rule. If a sentence sounds like a statistic and has no source, it should not be on this site.
