Choosing a school in Linz: private IB or public Gymnasium

ABIS offers a private IB continuum from early years. LISA is a public English-medium Gymnasium route from about age ten, with the Austrian Matura and IB Diploma.

Linz has two English-medium IB routes, but they differ in age, legal status and leaving qualifications.

Anton Bruckner International School, or ABIS, is a private day school at Wildbergstraße 18. It offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. The Diploma was authorised in April 2026, so ask how the first cohorts are being supported. ABIS is the relevant choice if your child is younger than ten or needs a continuous IB programme.

Linz International School Auhof, or LISA, is an English-medium branch of the public Europagymnasium Auhof at Aubrunnerweg 4. Most pupils can prepare for both the Austrian Matura and the IB Diploma. Its two-year Academy route is different: it is for pupils whose German prevents them from completing the Matura and leads to the full IB Diploma only.

The German terms matter. A public Gymnasium is an academically selective secondary school within the Austrian system. LISA does not charge private-school tuition, but its support association publishes annual contributions. ABIS charges annual private fees. The 2026–27 schedules list ABIS tuition from €2,350 in Early Learning to €5,500 for the Diploma; LISA’s association lists €700 membership, or €2,800 for the Academy including stated IB exam fees. Check the relevant profile and current terms before comparing totals.

Admissions and daily life

LISA’s Year 1 places for 2026–27 were full. Its page lists the next Austrian-primary registration period in February 2027. Older-year and Academy applicants follow different procedures, so ask about the correct route.

ABIS accepts applications under its published admission rules. Entry to the later MYP years normally expects an IB MYP transfer. Ask about language assessment, English support and financial aid for the intended year.

Both are day schools. Test Wildbergstraße and Aubrunnerweg from your likely home. If you expect to stay in Austria, compare the value of a Matura-and-IB route with an IB-only route rather than treating the programmes as identical.
