Independent schools in Leeds: day or boarding?

The Grammar School at Leeds is a day school. Woodhouse Grove offers day and boarding places on the Leeds–Bradford side of the region. Decide on the weekly arrangement before comparing entrance dates and fees.

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) and Woodhouse Grove School are co-educational independent schools for pupils through to A-Levels. Their locations and residential arrangements are materially different.

Decide whether boarding is part of the brief

GSAL is a day school at Alwoodley Gates, north of Leeds. It runs from nursery through Sixth Form on its broader school site. Its name does not mean it is a state grammar school; fees apply.

Woodhouse Grove’s senior campus is at Apperley Bridge, between Leeds and Bradford, with boarding as well as day places. Its junior provision at Brontë House has a separate nearby postcode. A family considering boarding should ask which boarding pattern and weekend arrangements apply to the child’s year. A day family should compare the Apperley Bridge journey with Alwoodley rather than paying attention to the boarding provision alone.

Both schools lead through GCSEs to A-Levels. For a pupil changing during an examination course, check subject combinations and examination boards before applying.

Entry for September 2027

GSAL’s application guidance gives 30 November 2026 as the deadline for Years 1–10 and Year 12. The main entrance assessments are on 15 January 2027. Year 7 and Year 12 means-tested bursary applicants have an earlier deadline of 30 September 2026, followed by bursary shortlisting assessments. Nursery and Reception applications can be considered through the year if places remain.

Woodhouse Grove’s Year 7 information schedules a candidate morning in the week beginning 11 January 2027 and a taster day in the week beginning 8 February. The page does not state the filing deadline, so obtain it from admissions before using the January assessment date as a planning deadline.

For other years, ask both schools whether a place is open before paying an application fee.

Compare a complete invoice

GSAL’s 2026–27 fees list senior tuition at £20,556 annually, including VAT where applicable. Lunch is extra. The application fee is £100, and an acceptance deposit is also required; ask for its current amount.

Woodhouse Grove’s 2026–27 schedule lists Years 7–10 at £19,746 annually for day pupils and £45,342 for boarders, including VAT. Years 11–13 are £19,998 day or £45,630 boarding. Lunch is compulsory and adds £315 each term. Its day application fee is £90 including VAT; international boarding has a different registration charge.

Fee totals do not indicate which school is affordable after bursary support. Ask for the application, assessment and evidence timetable before relying on assistance.

Test both journeys

GSAL’s postcode is LS17 9NA. Woodhouse Grove’s senior postcode is BD10 0NR. Check the morning and afternoon routes from the actual home, along with school transport, activity finishes and sibling collections. The two schools should not be treated as neighbouring Leeds-centre options.

Use the Leeds overview and UK guide to broaden the search. A sensible first enquiry states the year of entry, day or boarding need, current curriculum and whether financial assistance is required.
