Choosing a school in Bordeaux: private IB or public international lycée

International School 33 in Gradignan and Lycée François Magendie in Bordeaux serve different ages and qualifications. Start with the teaching language and your child’s entry year.

For a young child needing bilingual education, start with International School 33. For a teenager who can study the French curriculum, consider Lycée François Magendie. These are two useful options, not a complete list of Bordeaux schools.

What each school offers

IS33 is a private bilingual school in Gradignan, accepting children from age two and offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes through the Diploma. It is the more relevant of these two schools if you need primary education or want continuity within the IB. Ask how French and English are used in your child’s class, particularly if one language is new.

Magendie is a public lycée on rue des Treuils. Its American and Spanish international sections combine the French curriculum with additional study in the section language. The Baccalauréat Français International (BFI) is a French school-leaving qualification, not the IB Diploma. A section application therefore needs a discussion of French proficiency as well as English or Spanish.

Check the application, then the budget

For Magendie, distinguish entry to Seconde, the first lycée year, from a later application to Première BFI. The published Première tests on 1 April 2026 belonged to the 2026 intake; they are not a future appointment. Ask for the next section-specific calendar and how the application fits the public-school allocation process.

IS33’s fee information in our source review was still labelled 2025–2026. Request a schedule for your intended year, including registration, meals and any language support, before comparing annual costs. The profiles link to the official school pages.

Test the practical fit

Gradignan and rue des Treuils are different journeys. Check each route from the home you are considering, including collection after activities. For a long-term move, also investigate the local public school and its support for newly arrived pupils. Compare the support your child would receive, not simply whether a school uses “international” in its name.
