Basel schools, Aesch and Reinach, not Zurich
Basel is not a suburb of Zurich. It is a border city whose IB continuum sits in Aesch and Reinach. Ask which paper the child will hold, and which tram you can live with.

Basel is not a suburb of Zurich. It is a border city whose IB continuum sits in Aesch and Reinach. Ask which paper the child will hold, and which tram you can live with.
Basel is not “near Zurich.” It is a border city with a Rhine, a tram, and an official IB continuum posting families name in the first week — plus a much older set of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft schools that stay families name in the second.
The portrait we have is the International School Basel on three campuses in Aesch and Reinach. Use it for the 2026–27 franc table, the CHF 4,500 development fee, and which gate this child actually uses. This note is the city around it. The Switzerland country page is the wider map — Geneva, Zug, the Zugerberg, the lake boarding houses.
ISB is a day school. Early Childhood through Grade 6 at Arlesheimerstrasse in Aesch. Grades 7–8 at Fiechtenweg in Reinach Süd. Grades 9–12 at Fleischbachstrasse. Tram 11 is the honest number. It is not Kleinbasel, and it is not Wädenswil.
The school names the PYP, MYP and Diploma. That is the paper. A bilingual Swiss Matur on the Zugerberg is another climate. ISZL is Baar and Hünenberg. Montana keeps beds. Do not flatten them into one canton conversation.
If you might stay, an English IB diploma is not automatically the kindest paper. A Basel-Stadt Gymnasium, a Basel-Landschaft door, a French-speaking house on the other bank — those are official mornings. Families looking at ISB often also walk a German or French door in the same week, because the next posting may still be here.
The language of the yard is the test that matters more than the IB page. A child can thrive in English at 9 a.m. and still be lonely at 11 if the tram is speaking Basel German — or lonely in German if the playground is not.
Zurich is another city. Geneva is another lake. Do not treat the Rhine as a footnote to either.
Ask which campus this child stands in next September. Ask ISB whether the invoice is private or company, and what the 20% enrolment payment comes to. Ask how much German a new eight-year-old meets before Christmas.
Time Aesch, Fiechten and Fleischbachstrasse on the same wet Tuesday. Then walk a neighbourhood Gymnasium.
The city hub is the short map. The portrait is the long one.
Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
Three campuses south of Basel, not Bahnhofstrasse and not the Zugerberg. The only IB continuum the school names for this city. The 2026–27 regulation prints francs. Time tram 11, not a Zurich commute.
Chesières, Villars-sur-OllonChesières sits above Villars at about 1,200 metres. The school will send a tuition document. We will not borrow a number from a directory.
Pully, LausanneA Nord Anglia Swiss-international on the Vaud shore, not the UN quarter. Pully takes boarding from 11. Nyon stops at 12. The 2026–27 PDFs print day totals and a full-boarding year of CHF 112,000.
GenevaA Nord Anglia day-and-boarding campus in Versoix, not the UN quarter. High school offers IB, IBCP, an American diploma, the French Bac and the Swiss Maturité. The 2026–27 boarding year is a published CHF 117,500.
The letters on the leaver’s certificate matter. They are not the whole child. Here is how to tell them apart without a headache, and without pretending every door stays open.
16 minYou do not need a perfect algorithm. You need a few true things about your child, a boring list on the fridge, and the courage to ignore a beautiful campus that does not fit.
15 minTuition is the number on the homepage. The PDF is the number that arrives in March. Here is how to read the second one, without inventing a euro, a krona, or a deadline.
12 minSkip the question about last year’s average. Ask the ones that make a teacher’s face change. Then look at the corridor while they answer.
