Almancil school search

Schools in Almancil: Loulé, Faro and Nobel Almancil

Almancil sits in Loulé municipality in the central Algarve, between Faro, Loulé and the coastal resorts. Families here compare Portuguese state schools with an English-medium school offering the IB Diploma, and most plan their days around the car and Faro Airport.

Almancil is a parish of Loulé municipality in the central Algarve, inland from the coast and between Faro, Loulé and Quarteira. Its position makes it a practical base for a family with work in Faro or Loulé, or one parent who travels often through Faro Airport.

Getting around

Faro Airport, the Algarve’s international airport, is a short drive away, which matters to a family that commutes abroad or receives visitors often. The CP Linha do Algarve runs through Loulé municipality, with regional trains between Lagos and Faro and long-distance trains from Faro to Lisbon. Regional buses run under the Vamus Algarve network.

For daily school runs, expect to drive unless a school bus stops near your home. A bus route that passes through the area does not guarantee a stop near a particular house, so ask the school for the current route and check the journey at school times.

How the local system works

In Portugal, compulsory education lasts twelve years, from age six to 18 or until the end of upper secondary school. State schools are free, and the State guarantees a place for every pupil of compulsory school age. Pre-school is optional from age three. Families apply for state school places through the Portal das Matrículas.

State schools teach in Portuguese and are organised into clusters (agrupamentos). Almancil has its own, the Agrupamento de Escolas de Almancil. A newly arrived pupil whose first language is not Portuguese can receive Portuguese as a non-native language (PLNM) support after a placement test. For younger children in a family that will stay, the local route deserves serious thought.

The school in Almancil

Nobel Algarve Almancil is an English-medium day school from nursery to Year 13. Pupils follow a British curriculum to IGCSE, then choose the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or a BTEC in Sport. It suits a family in the central Algarve that wants the IB Diploma, or a sport-focused vocational route, without a long daily drive. It does not offer boarding. The profile covers admissions, fees and joining or leaving mid-year.

Alternatives to compare

  • Nobel Algarve Lagoa, further west on the EN125, offers A-levels and a Portuguese national section instead. It is a separate daily journey; see the Lagoa guide.
  • If the move could be to greater Lisbon, the Lisbon school search and Cascais guide cover a much wider international choice, including other IB schools.
  • For a family settling permanently, compare a local state school, especially for younger children.

Choose Almancil if the family will live between Faro and Loulé and the IB Diploma, or Portuguese state schooling, fits the child. Look elsewhere if the child needs A-levels or boarding. The Portugal guide explains the wider system.
