The American School of Barcelona is a non-profit international day school at c/ Jaume Balmes 7, 08950 Esplugues de Llobregat. The switchboard is +34 93 371 4016. Admissions sits on extension 126. Use asbarcelona.com. If a search result puts you on a fee directory or a different “American School,” you are in the wrong tab.
The about page says the school was founded in 1962 by Dr. José María Poal, a Barcelona-born physician who had practised in the United States and wanted an English-language American school for his own children. It opened in Pedralbes that October with 100 students from Kindergarten through Grade 5. By the late 1970s there were nearly 450 children on two Pedralbes sites; the permanent Esplugues campus gathered them. Middle States accreditation and recognition from the Generalitat of Catalunya arrived in the 1990s. The IB Diploma Programme was authorised in 2007 (the High School page says ASB has offered the Diploma since 2009 — ask which sentence is the authorisation year and which is the first teaching year). The IB Career-related Programme began in September 2025.
Today the about page says around 960 students from 60 countries, and later “nearly 1000.” Elementary currently prints 266 students and an average class of 22. High School currently prints 375 students, an average IB Diploma score of 37 for 2026, and an average IBDP class of 15. Those are the school’s own counters. We did not audit the registers. Homepage tiles for year founded, total enrolment, and countries did not render as numbers in the fetch we used; we are not inventing them from a blank graphic.
The useful questions are local. Can this child work in English? Will they actually learn Catalan, or only see Sant Jordi as a costume day? Are you paying the family rate or the corporate rate? And do you understand that a waiting-pool place for this year does not carry priority into next year?
ASB is built for families who want an American-style education from preschool through Grade 12, with a US High School Diploma at the end and the option of the IB Diploma or the newer Career-related Programme, and who can live within commuting distance of Esplugues.
The campus page is unusually specific about where people actually live. Most families are in Sarrià, Pedralbes, Les Corts, Sant Gervasi, Eixample, and Gràcia. Some walk from Esplugues and Sant Just. Others come from Sant Cugat, Castelldefels, Gavà Mar, and Sitges. The school sells bus seats for those longer runs. If you have taken a flat in Poblenou because the photos were pretty, measure the Tuesday morning, not the Saturday brunch.
It is a day campus. The official pages we opened describe a school you commute to. They do not advertise a boarding house. If the posting has not found a flat, this is not the campus that absorbs the child.
Applications run year round. Mid-year joins are a conversation about space, not a promise.
Esplugues de Llobregat is just outside Barcelona, about 10 kilometres from Plaça Catalunya. The school says it has one of the largest campuses in Barcelona for sport, stage, and dedicated indoor and outdoor rooms. The buildings are purpose-built: air conditioning in every classroom, a lot of natural light, flexible furniture.
What the campus page actually names:
Ask to see an ordinary Grade 4 classroom and the bus lane at 16:10, not only the 700-seat hall. A new logo and visual identity were on the homepage when we looked, with a rebuilt website “by the end of the summer.” Confirm you are on the live site, not a holding page, before you treat a menu as gospel.
Think in four bands. The mission is preschool through 12th grade. The about page calls the curriculum a holistic American one with multiple graduation pathways.
Early Childhood — PK3, PK4, K5. Applicants are met as individuals. The school looks at fine motor skills, gross motor skills, cognitive skills, English, and social and emotional maturity. If you cannot come in person, they ask for a short video. There is a half-day PK3 price on the fee table; full Early Childhood is a different line. Ask which clock the half day actually uses this year.
Elementary. Homeroom is the heart. The day begins with a morning meeting. The homeroom teacher takes reading, writing, maths, and science. Specialists take PE, art, music, Spanish, and Catalan. Average class size on the current Elementary page is 22. Traditions the school bothers to name: Spirit Week, Halloween with a parent-run carnival and an all-school parade, Sant Jordi with performances, a second-hand book market, and the exchange of books and roses, and student-led assemblies. There are three to four field trips a year, an overnight outdoor-education trip at the end of the year, and a five-day February Ski Week open to Grades 4–12. After-school activities run from sport and performing arts to chess and cooking.
Middle School, Grades 6–8. The published course list is American in shape and Catalan in the room: English Language Arts, Integrated Math, Humanities, Information Technology, Art, Band, Castellano y Sociales, Catalan and Catalan Language Learning. That last pair matters. Ask whether your child is in Catalan for native or near-native speakers, or in Catalan Language Learning, before you assume the playground will teach it.
High School, Grades 9–12. 375 students on the current page. Every student works toward the US High School Diploma, accredited by the Middle States Association. The school asks for a minimum of 22 full-year credits:

On top of that diploma, a student may take the full IB Diploma, individual IB Course Certificates, or the IB Career-related Programme. Certificates are the lighter door: IB courses without the full Diploma workload. The Diploma has been the academic headline since the late 2000s. The Career-related Programme, from September 2025, mixes Diploma-style courses with career-related study and practical work. Students on either IB path still earn the US diploma.
High School counselors split in two: university and career counselors who know American, British, Spanish, and international applications, and personal/academic counselors for wellbeing and learning needs. Additional IB Diploma courses can run through Pamoja. Ask which subjects are in the building this year and which are on a screen.
The 2026 average IB Diploma score on the High School page is 37, with IBDP classes averaging 15. That is the school talking about itself. It is not your child’s forecast.
Classroom English is the easy sentence. The rest is the city.
Spanish and Catalan start in Elementary as specialist subjects and continue through Middle School as both language and, in Castellano y Sociales, content. High School offers Catalan Language and Literature and Catalan Language Learning, plus English or Spanish Language and Literature in Grades 11–12, and IB Spanish A in Language and Literature and in Literature. French appears in the Grades 9–10 course list. School-supported self-taught Language A: Literature is on the IB menu.
The library stocks English, Spanish, and Catalan on purpose. Sant Jordi is not a decoration; it is a student-led day about books and roses. If you want a child who can live in Barcelona rather than only commute through it, this is the paragraph to test on a tour. Ask how many hours of Catalan in Grade 2 versus Grade 8, how sets are made, and what a child who arrived in January is doing by June.
The admissions process page says applications are read holistically, including level of English. The FAQ list includes “My child speaks little or no English” and “My child speaks little or no Spanish,” but the public page we fetched did not expand the answers. Do not guess. Ask admissions, in writing, what the floor is for your grade.
ASB also runs an English Language Center with Saturday and weekday programmes. That is a community English offer, not automatically the same thing as in-timetable EAL. Ask which one, if either, would apply to your child, and what it costs on top of tuition.
Visit if you can. The inquire page offers a personal tour, a virtual conversation, a virtual Open House on 10 December 2026 from 14:30–15:30, and an on-campus Open House on 30 January 2027 from 11:00–12:30.
When you apply, the online file wants academic records, teacher references, and, depending on the grade, standardised test scores. The application fee is €250, non-refundable. Then come assessments: English and maths, in person or virtual, varying by grade. Early Childhood is the five-area meeting or a video.
Decisions come in three envelopes:
Onboarding starts in late April. Each new family is paired with a Parent Ambassador. Students entering Grade 6 and above also get a Student Ambassador by email. Late August is New Family Orientation, by division.
We are not guessing how long a file takes. The FAQ list asks that question; the answers did not render. Ask for this year’s typical timeline when you inquire.
The fees page prints a Family Rate (the family pays) and a Corporate Rate (a company pays on behalf of the family). Read the star you actually are. The public table we fetched did not name a year in the heading; confirm on the live page that you are looking at this contract year before you budget.

The page also names discounts, semester-only students, returning-student rules, early withdrawals, and scholarships — as headings. The fetch did not expand those panels. Open them on the live fees page before you assume a sibling cut or a refund.
A first-year Grade 6 on the family rate is not “about €22,000.” It is application + matriculation + capital + tuition — €29,462 before lunch, a bus, Ski Week, or after-school chess. Corporate Grade 6 is €35,086 on the same arithmetic. Do it again on the live page the week you sign.
“Not Accepted” can mean the school cannot adequately meet the student’s support needs within the existing cohort. That is an official decision category, not a rumour. Bring current reports, an IEP if you have one, and ask in the room what ASB can staff this year. We are not inventing a specialist SEN offer the public pages we opened did not describe.
Counseling in High School covers learning needs as well as university forms. Ask where that support lives in Grade 3 and Grade 8, not only in Grade 11.
Ask where a January arrival sits at lunch in week one. Ask how Catalan is grouped, and whether a child with playground Spanish still starts in Catalan Language Learning. Ask whether your employer’s invoice is the corporate column. Ask how full the grade is, and what “waiting pool” means for this August versus next August. Ask how many Grade 11s are on the full IB Diploma, how many on certificates, and how many on the Career-related Programme. Ask what the 22-credit diploma looks like if the child might later need Spanish Bachillerato recognition — the school names the US diploma and the IB paths; Spanish equivalency is a question for admissions and the counsellor, not a sentence we will invent. Ask to see Grade 5 and Grade 9, not only El Chiringuito.
We are not ranking ASB among Barcelona international schools. We are not guessing a waitlist. We are not treating a 37 as a promise. We are not filling in FAQ answers the public page did not show. We are not inventing a boarding house, a uniform rule, or a 2027/28 fee.
Read the current fees page and write to admissions before you sign a lease in Sitges because the bus line exists. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
