George Watson’s College is a co-educational day school at Colinton Road, Edinburgh EH10 5EG. The official site is gwc.org.uk. Admissions admissions@gwc.org.uk, 0131 446 6005. The about page snapshot is 2,477 pupils, ages 3–18, day pupils, qualifications National 5, Highers, Advanced Highers. Preschool, junior and senior share one 52-acre campus.
This is not Fettes College. Fettes is a full-boarding ethos that still takes day pupils, on East Fettes Avenue, with GCSE then A-Level or IB. Watson’s is a day house that sits Nationals and Highers. They share an Edinburgh and almost no Tuesday. Families who walk one should walk the other, then ask which paper and which weekend they are actually buying.
The useful questions are: Do you want a Scottish leaving path, or an English/IB one? Can this child get to Colinton Road at 8:40? And have you read the 2026/27 table as annual / termly / monthly, not as three different schools?
Families who want a through-school in Edinburgh from Preschool to Senior 6, English in the classroom, and a Scottish exam path. Families who can live as a day household. There is no boarding house on this portrait’s official pages.
It will not suit a family hunting a boarding weekend, or A-Levels as the default paper. If the child needs IB or a full-boarding corridor, walk Fettes. If the life is London, do not paste Watson’s from a Colinton Road open day.
The about page calls itself co-educational with day pupils. The FAQs are frank that places in some years are “as and when,” and that Senior 4 has no entry unless exceptional. Ask admissions for this year group. A table of space numbers on that FAQ is labelled for 2025/26 applications. We will not treat it as 2026/27 inventory.
One site, Colinton Road. The campus page walks it like a village: Preschool classrooms with outdoor space; Lower Primary for P1–P3; a Junior dining hall that also hosts breakfast and after-school wraparound; Upper Primary in the John Martin Building (P4–P7); a Music School with a roofed auditorium; an Art School; design technology; the original Senior building with a 1,000-seat assembly hall; Myreside playing fields and a grandstand for 1,500; a Centre for Sport with four halls, a fitness suite and a 23.5-metre pool; tennis, hockey, cricket, a boat house on the canal, squash. Pipes and Drums have a dedicated house.
Ask to see this child’s year, not only the grandstand. Time the gate from the flat you will actually rent. A 52-acre campus in a capital is still a school run.
Preschool to Senior 6. The FAQ school-day clock: Preschool arrive 8:30–9:00, collect 2:45–3:00; P1 8:40 / 2:50; P2 8:40 / 2:55; P3 8:40 / 3:00; P4–P7 8:40 / 3:15; Senior 8:40 / 3:30.
The senior curriculum page: in S3 and S4 the work narrows toward National 5, with English, mathematics, PE and languages still core. In S5 pupils generally take five Highers, including English and mathematics. Many, the school says, are offered a Scottish university place on those Highers. S6 is extra Highers and Advanced Highers, plus enrichment. There is a partnership with Edinburgh College for further flexibility.
This is a Scottish paper. Do not budget as if it were Westminster.
The apply page asks for a passport copy, a full extract of the birth certificate, and an application fee the page prints as £85, or £180 if you need a visa.
The FAQ still welcomed applications for August 2026. Closing dates it prints for 2027/28: P2–P7 Friday 13 November 2026; P1 and Senior School Friday 4 December 2026. Main intakes it names: Preschool, P1, P6, P7, S1 — and limited places in other years.
Assessment is not, the school says, “an exam.” It is age-stage:
Offers also weigh siblings, extra-curricular potential, and old-pupil connections (parent, then grandparent / close relative, including the older Boys’ and Ladies’ colleges and John Watson’s). Distance assessments exist for families abroad; the school prefers P1–P3 in person.
If a child does well and the year is full, they go on a waiting list; the application can carry forward to the next year up to S1, then they sit again. Edinburgh independents share a common acceptance deadline — the FAQ says you should not be pressured to accept before it.
Preschool does not automatically become P1. Most do. Staff will say if they think the child should repeat preschool, or if Watson’s is the wrong environment.
Financial assistance: the school says it supports over 200 current pupils. Applications for help in 2026/27 were closed on the fees page we read. 2027/28 help opens autumn 2026. A limited number of new Foundation Places (75–100% fee assistance) for S1 in 2026/27 were on the apply page — income first, then social or educational adversity. Not every eligible child is offered one.
The fees page reviews tuition each June. Fees were frozen for 2025/26. From 1 January 2025, P1–S6 figures are inclusive of 20% VAT. Pay annually, termly, or monthly by direct debit over 10 months. Fees in Advance: 1% off if you pay a year or future years up front.
The 2026/27 table prints three numbers per band. The first is the session figure; the second is labelled Termly; the third is monthly over 10 months. For Senior School those numbers are £20,351 / £6,784 / £2,035 — a year, a third, and a tenth. Confirm the live table before you budget.

The school capped the 2026/27 rise at 1.8%, and says the affordability strategy now gives visibility through summer 2029 with rises of no more than 3% in the remaining years. That is a school commitment on a fees page, not a contract we can enforce.
Not in the tuition (fees page and FAQ): uniform, books, a leased laptop from P7 (added to fees), residential trips (£180–£800 curricular; optional tours extra), lunch for P1–S6 (swipe card; packed lunch free), buses (P4–S6; monthly, by route — Peebles, Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, Haymarket), some extra sport (horse riding, rowing), music lessons, wraparound care. The FAQ says Preschool snack and hot lunch are included. Core school sports it names as free: hockey, tennis, rugby, cricket, netball, and several low-cost sports.
A first-year S1 place is not “about £20,351.” It is application + the annual band + VAT already inside + laptop + lunch + the bus if you need it. Do the sum on the live page.
Ask whether this child is a Highers Tuesday or whether you still wish you had walked Fettes. Ask how a shy P7 from a state primary meets the English and Maths papers. Ask what S4 looks like if you arrive mid-Highers. Walk Fettes in the same week if boarding is even a maybe.
We are not ranking Watson’s among Edinburgh independents. We are not inventing a 2026/27 place count from a 2025/26 FAQ table. We are not treating a fee-cap sentence as a promise for 2030. We are not calling this the same childhood as Fettes. Read the current fees and apply pages before you sign a Colinton Road lease. This is a map. The school still has the file.
