TASIS Portugal: an American foundation, IGCSE and IB

TASIS Portugal offers American-style learning followed by IGCSE and the IB Diploma in Quinta da Beloura. Course continuity and learning-support limits matter when transferring. Obtain current tuition: the detailed policy includes older charges, including a 2023/24 campus fee.

TASIS Portugal combines an American-style foundation with Cambridge IGCSE courses and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) in the final years. It is an English-medium, co-educational day school in Quinta da Beloura, Sintra, from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12.

This is a useful option if that sequence fits the child’s education plans. For a transfer, the important limits are course continuity in Grade 10, Diploma entry requirements and the school’s ability to meet any learning needs. Families should also understand that English-language support can replace Portuguese lessons in Elementary.

School background and location

The published address is Estrada Nacional No 9, Quinta da Beloura II, 2710-697 Sintra. Contact admissions@tasisportugal.org or +351 219 241 004. Use tasisportugal.org; the older policy also names tasis.pt.

Plan the actual school journey from the prospective home and visit the child’s section. TASIS Portugal is a day school without boarding.

Curriculum and qualifications

The curriculum page names these programmes:

Years Framework
Pre-Kindergarten–Grade 8 Core Knowledge for language arts, history and geography: a planned sequence of subject knowledge
Kindergarten–Grade 8 Singapore Math, using Math-in-Focus, and Next Generation Science Standards
Grades 9–10 Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), two-year subject courses
Grades 11–12 IB Diploma Programme

The school reports Core Knowledge School of Distinction status. It also names ELLI, the Toolbox Project and Wayfinder for learning habits and social-emotional development, alongside languages, music, chess and public speaking. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments take place twice yearly, in autumn and spring.

The May 2025 admissions document retains older references to 2023/24, when Grades 11–12 were still being added, and to IB candidate status. The newer curriculum page identifies TASIS Portugal as an authorised IB World School for the Diploma. The older wording should not be presented as an equally current status. The school says all members of its Class of 2026 pursued the full Diploma; that is participation, not a pass rate or average score.

Placement and transfer requirements

The admissions policy gives these conditions:

  • PK1: age three before 1 September, toilet trained and able to manage a 09:00–15:00 day.
  • Kindergarten: fifth birthday before 1 September.
  • Grade 10: already following IGCSE, with continuity of the courses guaranteed.
  • Internal Diploma entry: six IGCSE subjects at grade C or above, including English and mathematics. Higher Level subjects, the more advanced IB level, are encouraged for pupils with A grades.
  • External Grade 11: a meeting with the Diploma coordinator.

Grades 1–4 have two teachers per class; Grade 5 has a homeroom teacher and subject specialists. Confirm the child’s placement and applicable policy when applying, since the detailed admissions document is dated May 2025.

English and learning support

Portuguese is taught as a subject, not as the main classroom language. In Elementary, English Language Development (ELD) replaces Portuguese for pupils who need that support. Ask how and when Portuguese can resume.

The policy describes TASIS as a mainstream academic school. It welcomes applications from pupils with disabilities or special educational needs if they can access the curriculum at the pace taught. This is a consequential limit, not an unconditional promise of support.

Disclose health, learning and language needs with the application. In-school learning support is separately priced in the older policy, and Grade 3 or above requires a psycho-educational assessment first. Agree the provision, staffing and cost for the child before accepting.

Application process

The May 2025 policy describes the process through OpenApply, the admissions platform:

  1. Create an account and complete the correct division’s application: Early Learning, Elementary, Middle or High School.
  2. Supply three years of reports, or all reports to date for a younger child, a teacher recommendation, available standardised test results, educational assessments and any individual education plan (IEP).
  3. Pay the non-refundable application fee: €150 for Early Learning, covering PK1, PK2 and Kindergarten, or €100 from Grade 1.
  4. Attend a family visit, in person or by video where distance requires.
  5. Receive an offer, a refusal or placement in the wait pool after committee review.

Early Learning uses a play-based assessment covering basic concepts, foundational skills, language, fine and gross motor skills, and social skills. Older applicants from a non-comparable system may take WIDA English-language assessment and/or MAP reading and mathematics tests.

The wait pool is not a ranked queue. The committee considers gender and language balance, siblings and academic achievement. Siblings in the pool have priority over other applicants.

Early and regular admissions

The December early-admission process requires a complete file by 1 December. Decisions are due on 8 December; families must reply by 15 December, pay the Campus Enhancement Fee and complete the enrolment agreement. It is intended for families who plan to enrol if admitted. Places are limited because current pupils’ re-enrolment is not yet settled.

Regular admissions follow the existing-family re-enrolment deadline of 15 February, with rolling offers until classes fill. Early Learning offers are made throughout the year until full, with siblings prioritised.

Fees: dated figures, not a current tuition quotation

The May 2025 policy establishes the following charges. The research did not establish a verified annual tuition table, lunch or transport amount. That does not mean no current fee schedule exists; request one from admissions.

Charge Policy amount Condition
Early Learning application €150 PK1, PK2, Kindergarten; non-refundable
Application from Grade 1 €100 Non-refundable
Re-enrolment €750 Due 15 February; non-refundable. Waived for third-term joiners for that year only.
Campus Enhancement Fee (CEF) €5,000 Explicitly a 2023/24 figure for Kindergarten and above; not a verified 2026/27 rate
Pre-K enrolment deposit €3,000 Credited to first-term tuition. PK1/PK2 families are billed for CEF in the summer before Kindergarten.
Reconsideration after a leave of absence €75 Earlier policy notes; confirm current applicability
In-school learning support €20 per hour Additional to tuition; prior psycho-educational assessment from Grade 3
WIDA language assessment €75 Additional charge

The CEF and Pre-K deposit are non-refundable. The policy makes an exception if the school does not invite the child back: unused CEF is returned after the school year ends. A credited Pre-K deposit should not be added again to the full tuition amount.

Withdrawal requires one term’s notice. Late-payment charges are 4% in the first 30 days and then 4% per month. Unpaid balances prevent re-enrolment.

A leave of absence does not reserve a place. Returning families provide updated reports; previously paid CEF remains recognised, and the €750 re-enrolment charge still applies.

Our view

TASIS Portugal is worth considering for its combination of structured subject learning in the younger years, IGCSE and a full IB Diploma route. It is not an IB continuum school, and a mid-IGCSE transfer needs a close subject match.
