St. Olav videregående skole offers a public International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in central Stavanger. It is a practical option for an upper-secondary pupil with suitable prior study, strong English and an accepted residence position in Rogaland. It is not a through-school for younger children.

The main address is Jens Zetlitz gate 33, 4008 Stavanger. Temporary teaching space is also in Kannikgården, Engelsminnegata 16. The building-project update of 2 July 2026 targeted use of the new gym in September and main handover in October 2027. Confirm the pupil’s actual teaching locations during the works. The school is a day school, with no boarding provision identified in the cited information.

Diploma or international Vg1?

The Diploma occupies Vg2 and Vg3, the second and third years of Norwegian upper secondary. Teaching and examinations are in English. Pupils study six subjects over both years, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level.

The school describes an international pupil community and a personal tutor who also advises on CAS: creativity, activity and service, part of the Diploma. Its IB explanation emphasises that IB sets subject hours, examinations and assessment. Do not assume the Norwegian general-studies assessment arrangements apply unchanged.

The international Vg1 class is separate preparation, suitable for pupils considering IB or wanting stronger English. Its content and examinations match ordinary Vg1 general studies. Selected topics use Norwegian and English, with one weekly Critical Thinking lesson wholly in English, without examination or grade.

Apply to ordinary Vg1 first, then request the international class on the reply form after admission. If oversubscribed, selection uses lower-secondary grades. It is not an entirely English-medium first year or automatic Diploma admission.

Diploma entry conditions

The admissions policy revised in spring 2026 requires:

  • A Norwegian residence permit and an address in Rogaland. Families moving there may receive a conditional offer.
  • English sufficient to follow the programme.
  • Satisfactory mathematics, such as Norwegian 1T, the theoretical Vg1 course, or suitable IGCSE or MYP5 mathematics.
  • Available places and subjects.

Accepted prior study includes the IB Middle Years Programme through MYP5; International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); or equivalent schooling of at least ten years. Norwegian routes include Vg1 general studies, music/dance/drama, sport, or art with general studies.

Norwegian B requires A2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The alternative named in the policy is a school-supported self-taught Language A course, in which the pupil studies a first-language literature course with school support. Discuss this route before assuming a lack of Norwegian prevents all entry.

The school may require an interview and/or entrance tests in mathematics, English or Norwegian. The IB coordinator and head recommend admission; Rogaland county gives formal approval.

Application steps

The policy gives a 1 March deadline with grade reports. Apply through Vigo, complete the school form, and follow the school’s submission instructions.

Costs and practical questions

The cited IB pages and spring 2026 policy do not specify a pupil tuition or administrative-fee schedule. Obtain written confirmation of any applicable programme, examination and personal costs from the school rather than importing another school’s fee structure.

Our view

Compare International School of Stavanger if the family also needs younger-year English-medium schooling. For a Diploma transfer, the immediate priorities are accepted prior study, available subjects, language choice and teaching locations during construction.
