N. Zahles Skole — Danish private schools and STX in Copenhagen

N. Zahles Skole is an umbrella for two Danish private schools and a fee-paying STX gymnasium. Choose the exact unit before applying: their waiting lists, interviews and upper-secondary admissions are not interchangeable.

N. Zahles Skole is not one continuous school with a single admissions office. It is an umbrella organisation in central Copenhagen with two private primary and lower-secondary schools and a private STX gymnasium:

  • N. Zahles Gymnasieskole, Grundskoleafdelingen, at Nørre Voldgade 5–7, covers Grade 0–9.
  • N. Zahles Seminarieskole, at Linnésgade 8, also covers Grade 0–9.
  • N. Zahles Gymnasium at Nørre Voldgade covers 1.g–3.g and ends with the Danish STX qualification.

All are Danish-medium day schools. There is no boarding and no English-medium international curriculum.

Our view: choose the unit, not just the Zahle name

Zahle suits a family that wants a central Copenhagen private-school education in Danish and accepts both tuition and early waiting lists. The gymnasium is useful for a student who wants the academically broad three-year STX, Denmark’s general upper-secondary leaving qualification, in a smaller fee-paying setting.

It is not a substitute for Copenhagen International School, which teaches in English and follows IB programmes. Institut Sankt Joseph is the better comparison when the child can meet a Danish–English bilingual admissions threshold.

Entry to the two lower schools

At Gymnasieskole Grundskoleafdelingen, most entry takes place in Grade 0 and Grade 6, when the school expands by two classes. Other grades admit only when vacancies arise. The school allows registration from birth and charges a DKK 500 non-refundable waiting-list fee. Families must reconfirm their interest through the annual email link or the child is removed from the list.

The school’s page says Grade 0 admissions for 2026–27 are complete. That is the current year, not a forecast for 2027–28. Ask for the next cohort’s position before paying. A child invited forward attends an admissions interview. If a place is offered, the school charges a DKK 1,500 admission fee, which is not refunded if the family later declines to start.

At Seminarieskolen, registration also costs DKK 500. A Grade 0 child is listed for the calendar year in which they turn six. Parents on the list are invited to an information evening by late September or early October in the school year before entry. An offered place also carries a DKK 1,500 non-refundable admission fee. For transfers into Grades 1–9, parent and child meet school leaders, the class teacher and sometimes another teacher before admission.

The Grundskole page also names a separate Læseskolen route linked to dance aptitude and Royal Danish Theatre information. Elsewhere, the school describes its cooperation with the theatre’s Statistskole: all Grade 2 pupils may audition, and selected children in Grades 2–5 receive theatre-based instruction and may appear in productions. Ask the school and theatre which programme is meant before treating either as a normal Zahle admissions route.

Entry to the STX gymnasium

The gymnasium advertises 2027–28 visit days from December until the national deadline and an orientation evening on 19 January 2027. Entry to 1.g goes through Optagelse.dk, just as it does for public Danish gymnasiums. The national deadline is 1 March at noon in the year of entry.

STX has an initial foundation period, after which students continue in a subject combination called a studieretning. Zahle publishes current study directions in science, social science, languages and music. A student applying from a different system should have the school map previous subjects and Danish ability to the national STX entry rules before ranking Zahle.

For transfer to 2.g or 3.g, use the gymnasium’s separate transfer page. Subject combinations can make a mid-programme move impossible even when a physical place exists.

Fees in 2026–27

The umbrella fee page applies the following amounts to both lower schools and the gymnasium for 2026–27:

Charge 2026–27 amount
Tuition DKK 26,400 a year, collected as DKK 2,400 in 11 months
SFO DKK 19,800 a year, collected as DKK 1,800 in 11 months
Administration without PBS direct debit DKK 75 a month

There has been no sibling discount since 1 August 2025. Tuition is due in advance on the first of the month and is timely if paid by the fifth. Trips and other unit-specific charges are additional.

The gymnasium also lists DKK 22 a month for 11 months for N. Zahles Skoles Venner, approved by the parent body. Its withdrawal notice is longer than many international-school families expect: written withdrawal takes effect at a month-end, and tuition remains payable for that month plus the following two months. The student may attend during the notice period.

Seminarieskolen’s own admissions page still shows a 2025–26 fee section with parent-council and fruit charges. Do not add those old extras to the current umbrella total without a 2026–27 confirmation from the relevant school.

Learning support

The gymnasium’s current support page is comparatively specific. It offers homework help twice a week, a reading adviser, access to reading and writing software for dyslexic students, and possible SPS support for a documented disability or chronic illness. SPS means Denmark’s state-funded special educational support for students in qualifying education. Adjustments can include extra examination time, but they depend on documentation and an individual decision.

Support in the two lower schools is unit-specific. Their public navigation names reading guidance and cooperation with Copenhagen municipality, but it does not provide a single current promise of hours, staffing or eligibility across both schools. Share reports with the exact unit before interview and ask what it can deliver.
