John Lyon is a co-educational day school for ages 2–18. Its Senior campus is on Middle Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill, HA2 0HN; Prep is on Hindes Road, Harrow, HA1 1RX. Check the journey to the campus your child would actually attend.
It is separate from Harrow School, a boys’ boarding school. Both belong to the Harrow Family of Schools and share links through John Lyon’s Foundation, but their admissions, daily arrangements and fees are different. John Lyon does not offer boarding.
The school’s September 2026 visit information says all entry points are co-educational. The 2024 inspection recorded 866 pupils aged 3–18; those are historical figures, not the current roll or minimum entry age.
Who it suits
John Lyon is worth considering for a family based in north-west London seeking co-educational day education through GCSEs and A-levels. A-levels, rather than the International Baccalaureate Diploma, are its Sixth Form qualification.
The October 2025 admissions policy lists these usual entry points:
- Nursery from age 2, Reception at 4, and Year 3 at 7.
- Senior entry at 11 (Year 7), 13 (Year 9), and 16 (Sixth Form).
- Occasional places at other stages, subject to availability.
The 2024 Independent Schools Inspectorate report covered Prep, Senior and Sudbury Fields. It found that the school met all the required standards. That finding should not be presented as an “excellent” grade from an older inspection framework.
Visits and applications
The published Whole School Open Morning is Sunday 27 September 2026. Term-time School in Action tours are also offered. Prep tours cover Pre-Nursery through Year 3; Senior tours cover Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form. Use the visit page to choose the relevant event.
Registration is online and requires a passport and the latest school report. The registration fee is £200; the fee section below lists the other initial charges.
Year 7: September 2027 entry
The Year 7 page gives an application, scholarship and bursary deadline of 4pm on 31 October 2026. Entrance assessments take place on 18 or 19 November 2026. Confirm which date is allocated to your child.
The assessment comprises:
- 45 minutes of English.
- 45 minutes of mathematics.
- A group activity and discussion.
There is no formal interview and no verbal or non-verbal reasoning paper. The school also obtains a confidential reference from the current school.
Children must be 11 by 1 September of the entry year. Deferred entry is not offered. An unsuccessful 11+ applicant may apply again at 13+.
Results are expected in the second week of February, with offer letters on the Friday before February half-term and an event for offer holders. Acceptance is through the portal. The bursary page states 3 March as the final acceptance date for all 11+ offers; check the date in the individual offer letter.
Scholarships cover Art, Drama, Music, Sport and STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The page said 2027 assessment dates would be published on 1 September 2026, but the table checked on 3 September still showed the previous cycle. Obtain the current assessment schedule from admissions rather than using those older dates.
Year 9 assessment includes compulsory papers in English, mathematics, French and science, an optional Latin or language paper, and a group discussion. The published bursary deadline is also 4pm on 31 October 2026.
For 16+ entry, the published process includes an autumn open evening, January A-level options talks with Year 11, and interviews at the beginning of March. Entry is conditional on GCSE results. The stated minimum includes grade 6 in mathematics and in either English Literature or English Language. Ask about any additional requirements for the intended A-level subjects.
Financial assistance
Means-tested bursaries are available to new entrants in Year 7, Year 9 and Lower Sixth, the first Sixth Form year. Register for admission first, then submit the bursary form by 4pm on 31 October 2026.
Applicants are shortlisted after the examination. Supporting documents are requested during 4–11 December. The bursary page provides the application contact and asks families to use a personal email address rather than a work account that may block messages.
Fees for 2026–27
The fee schedule is effective from 1 September 2026. It states that fees include VAT where applicable. Lunch is included for all pupils.
| Stage |
Per term |
| Nursery |
£4,456 |
| Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 |
£6,385 |
| Years 3–6 |
£7,265 |
| Year 7 to Upper Sixth |
£10,076 |
Three Senior terms total £30,228, calculated before extras.
The fees page also lists the initial charges. Registration is £200, including VAT, and is not refundable. The acceptance confirmation is £1,250 for UK families and £3,750 for overseas families. Ask admissions for the acceptance terms before you pay.
Fees are paid by Direct Debit on the first day of term unless another arrangement is agreed with finance. The school lists childcare vouchers for Nursery and Reception until the child’s fifth birthday, not for Senior tuition. A coach service is available, but the reviewed material does not establish its fare.
Our view
Compare Harrow School only if boys’ boarding is a realistic alternative for your family. Its residential provision makes it a different choice, not another campus of the same school.
