George Watson’s College is a co-educational day school at Colinton Road, Edinburgh EH10 5EG. Preschool, Junior School and Senior School share a 52-acre campus, serving ages 3–18. The school’s published profile records 2,477 pupils; this is a school-reported snapshot, not a current admissions capacity.

Watson’s follows the Scottish qualifications system rather than an A-level or International Baccalaureate programme. It has no boarding provision. Curriculum continuity and the daily journey should therefore come before comparisons of headline fees.

Compare The Edinburgh Academy if you want another Edinburgh day-school option. Consider Fettes College separately if boarding or a different qualification route is essential.

Who it is for

Watson’s suits families seeking English-medium education from preschool through the final senior year, with Scottish examinations and a large shared campus.

It is less suitable if the child needs boarding or must continue an existing A-level course. For an older transfer, ask how completed subjects map to the Scottish curriculum before applying.

Availability varies by year, and Senior 4 entry is exceptional. The FAQ’s place-count table is labelled 2025/26 and does not establish current vacancies. Ask Admissions about the intended year group.

Campus and facilities

Preschool has classrooms with outdoor space. Lower Primary covers P1–P3, while P4–P7 use the John Martin Building. The Junior dining hall also accommodates breakfast and after-school care.

Specialist facilities include music, art and design-technology spaces. The Senior building has a 1,000-seat assembly hall, and Pipes and Drums have dedicated premises.

Sports provision includes Myreside playing fields, a 1,500-seat grandstand and a sports centre with four halls, a fitness suite and a 23.5-metre pool. The school also describes tennis, hockey, cricket, squash and a canal boathouse.

How the years are organised

P1–P7 are the seven primary years; S1–S6 are the six senior years. The FAQ gives these daily times:

Stage Arrival or start Finish or collection
Preschool 08:30–09:00 14:45–15:00
P1 08:40 14:50
P2 08:40 14:55
P3 08:40 15:00
P4–P7 08:40 15:15
Senior School 08:40 15:30

In S3 and S4, pupils work towards National 5, Scottish subject qualifications usually taken in S4. English, mathematics, physical education and languages remain core areas.

In S5, pupils generally take five Highers, including English and mathematics. Highers are central to Scottish university entry, although each course sets its own subject and grade requirements.

S6 offers further Highers, Advanced Highers and enrichment. Advanced Highers provide more specialised study. The school also describes a partnership with Edinburgh College that widens available options.

How a child actually gets in

The apply page asks for a passport copy, a full extract of the birth certificate, and an application fee the page prints as £85, or £180 if you need a visa.

The FAQ gives 2027/28 application deadlines of 13 November 2026 for P2–P7 and 4 December 2026 for P1 and Senior School. Its separate invitation to apply for August 2026 refers to an intake date that has passed.

Main intakes are Preschool, P1, P6, P7 and S1, with limited places in other years.

Assessment is not, the school says, “an exam.” It is age-stage:

  • P1: one-to-one with early-years staff, talk and games
  • P2–P3: one-to-one, literacy and numeracy
  • P4–P7: standardised English and Maths; P6 and P7 also a short group discussion
  • Senior: English and Maths papers, a questionnaire, a group discussion; S2–S5 a short interview; S6 an assessment that depends on subject choices

Offers also take account of siblings, extracurricular potential and former-pupil connections. For family connections, the school considers a parent before a grandparent or close relative, including attendance at its predecessor schools.

Those predecessor connections include the Boys’ and Ladies’ colleges and John Watson’s. Distance assessment is available for families abroad, although the school prefers to assess P1–P3 applicants in person.

If a child does well and the year is full, they go on a waiting list; the application can carry forward to the next year up to S1, then they sit again. Edinburgh independents share a common acceptance deadline — the FAQ says you should not be pressured to accept before it.

Preschool does not automatically become P1. Most do. Staff will say if they think the child should repeat preschool, or if Watson’s is the wrong environment.

The school reports supporting over 200 pupils with financial assistance. Applications for 2026/27 assistance were closed in the existing research; the published plan was to open 2027/28 applications in autumn 2026.

The 2026/27 application page advertised limited S1 Foundation Places, covering 75–100% of fees. These considered income first, then social or educational adversity. Eligibility did not guarantee an award; ask for the next cycle’s availability and criteria.

Money, as the school printed it for 2026/27

The fees page reviews tuition each June. Fees were frozen for 2025/26. From 1 January 2025, P1–S6 figures are inclusive of 20% VAT. Pay annually, termly, or monthly by direct debit over 10 months. Fees in Advance: 1% off if you pay a year or future years up front.

The published annual, termly and monthly figures are alternative payment presentations, not additional charges. Some displayed instalments are rounded and do not multiply exactly to the annual total. Ask how the final payment is adjusted.

2026/27 stage Annual Termly Monthly over ten months
Preschool £12,570 £4,190 £1,257
Primary 1–2 £13,120 £4,373 £1,312
Primary 3–5 £15,814 £5,271 £1,581
Primary 6–7 £15,975 £5,325 £1,597
Senior School £20,351 £6,784 £2,035

The school capped the 2026/27 rise at 1.8%, and says the affordability strategy now gives visibility through summer 2029 with rises of no more than 3% in the remaining years. That is a school commitment on a fees page, not a contract we can enforce.

Tuition excludes uniform, books and the leased laptop required from P7. Curricular residential trips are listed at £180–£800, with optional tours charged separately.

Preschool snacks and hot lunch are included. Lunch for P1–S6 is paid through a swipe-card system; pupils can bring a packed lunch without a meal charge.

Buses serve P4–S6 and are charged monthly by route. The listed routes cover Peebles, Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian and Haymarket. Confirm stops, availability and the applicable price.

Music lessons, wraparound care and some sports, including horse riding and rowing, cost extra. The school lists hockey, tennis, rugby, cricket and netball among its free core sports, alongside other low-cost activities.

For a new S1 pupil, start with annual tuition of £20,351, with VAT already included. Add the application charge, laptop and the meals, travel and activities the child will use. Do not add VAT again.
