European School Varese is a Type 1 European School, not a private IB campus and not the American School of Milan or the British School of Milan. Official site eurscva.eu. Address the EURSC location page prints: Via Montello 118, I-21100 Varese (VA). Phone +39 0332 80 61 11. Fax +39 0332 80 62 02. Codice fiscale 80009540123. Parents’ association: agsev.it.
It is a day school. There is no boarding house. If the posting has not found a flat, this school will not absorb the child.
Director on the EURSC page: Zdravka Grđan. Nursery and primary deputy: Antonella Selvaggio. Assistant: Nelly Gastineau. Secondary deputy: Elizabeth McDonald. Assistant: Jens-Uwe Steinbach. Finance: Fabrizio Cattari. Switchboard +39 0332 806 111. Director’s office +39 0332 806 229. Enrolments +39 0332 806 210.
The country page is right about Ispra. The Joint Research Centre is why a traditional European School sits in Varese. Time Via Montello at the hour you would actually travel. It is not a Noverasco Tuesday.
The useful questions are: Are you Category I, II, or III? Which language section is this child’s dominant language — French, English, Italian, Dutch or German — not the language you wish they had? And do you understand that the leaving paper is the European Baccalaureate, not the IB?
Who it is for
The enrolments page: the Board of Governors decided that besides children of European officials, other pupils may be admitted — “private” pupils, or children covered by agreements with companies working on the territory. New agreements, that page says, can still be concluded.
Category I — children who have to be admitted because a parent works for an EU institution. Fee-exempt on the Board table. Confirm the employer letter.
Category II — a signed agreement. The 2026/27 Board table prints a new-contract Varese line of €14,186.50. The current-contract cell is still tba. Ask which contract this employer actually has.
Category III — other families, if places remain. They pay the ordinary Board fees. The Director must keep seats free so later Category I and II arrivals do not split a class. We will not invent a seat.
It will not suit a family hunting English IB south of Milan, or an Italian liceo in the same postcode. Walk those if that is the climate. They share a region and almost no Monday.
The campus you can actually picture
One Varese address, not a Milan ring-road. The primary pedagogy page: primary from the September the child turns 6, five years, ages 6–10. The secondary application form for 2026/27 prints the year opening on Wednesday 2 September 2026.
Canteen sits with COMSEV. The 2026/27 secondary form: prices are set in May; a discounted price needs a membership form on comsev.eu. Bus contracts, the same form says, become available in June 2026. We will not invent those euros.
It is a day school. There is no boarding house.
Languages
Five sections, as the pedagogy page prints them: French, English, Italian, Dutch, German. L2 from primary 1 is German, English or French. L3 from S1. L4 optional from S4. Latin from S2 for at least two years. Human sciences move into L2 from S3.
SWALS — a child whose mother tongue is an official EU language without a section here — may keep L1 under the European Schools rules. Category I and II are entitled to that L1 if the school has, or can recruit, a qualified teacher. Category III, the 2026/27 secondary form says, only if a course already exists and does not create a new group. Once a Category III child has SWALS status, it stays for pedagogical continuity. SWALS usually sit in English, French or German; the section language becomes L2.
Place the child in the language they actually live in. A wish is not a section.
How a child actually gets in
Enrolment forms for 2026/2027 sit on the school’s own moduli page. The secondary PDF: return pages 5–16 only; reports for 2023/24, 2024/25 and the latest 2025/26 sheet; a promotion certificate at the end of the year; for in-year entry, a 2026/27 attendance certificate. The school may set a language test to place the child. Once in a section, the child is expected to stay.
Paying categories: older school FAQs and the form itself say deposits are not reimbursable. The form also binds both parents, jointly, even after a later separation. Ask enrolments which deposit applies to this file. We will not invent a 2026 euro the public fees page does not reprint as a Varese-only line.
A Dote scuola page exists beside the fees page. That is a Lombardy instrument, not a Category I exemption. Ask the school whether it applies to this household. We will not invent an award.
Money, as the 2026/2027 Board table prints it
The school’s rette 2026–2027 page points families to the Secretary-General’s table. Category I pays no Board tuition.

Older Category III pupils enrolled before 2013/14 sit a lower Board line. Ask which column this child is in. The Secretary-General marks the figures for guidance only.
The school also publishes a 2026/27 page on instalments and reductions. Open it. We will not invent a hardship percentage the public extract did not print as a table.
Lunch, bus, locker, insurance and school books are not the Board minerval. The secondary form says parents undertake those charges. Ask. We will not invent them.
Leaving certificates
The European Baccalaureate. This is not the IB and not the Italian maturità. Ask with this child’s subjects and section.
What to ask on the stairs
Ask the category in the week the posting is real. Ask which section is the child’s dominant language, and whether a Category III SWALS course actually exists. Ask which fee document will be on the first invoice. Ask what COMSEV lunch costs in May. Ask what happens if the posting ends in November: this is a European Schools year that the form dates from 2 September 2026.
We are not ranking Varese against Milan. We are not guessing a waitlist.
Read the live fees page and the Board table before you resign a flat. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
