Spinoza Lyceum is a public, Dutch-medium Dalton secondary school in Amsterdam-Zuid. It offers mavo, havo, atheneum and gymnasium, with first-year admission through Amsterdam’s central matching system.
Spinoza Lyceum is a public, co-educational Dutch secondary school in Amsterdam-Zuid. It is a day school, not an international school or a boarding school. Teaching and the final qualifications are Dutch.
The school is at Peter van Anrooystraat 8, 1076 BH Amsterdam. Its website reports about 1,315 pupils across mavo, havo, atheneum and gymnasium.
This is a strong fit question rather than a fee question. A pupil needs to work at secondary-school pace in Dutch and be comfortable planning some of their own study. First-year applicants must also follow Amsterdam’s central process.
The four labels describe three lengths and destinations:
These are Dutch national qualifications, not IB or British exam routes. The school’s broad range can let a pupil change level in the lower years without changing school, but progression depends on results and school rules.
Spinoza has a one-year brugklas, or bridge class. The final primary-school recommendation determines which first-year option appears in the admissions system.

The mavo/havo class teaches at mavo level. The havo/vwo class works at both levels. After the first year, pupils move to the appropriate second-year route.
An exceptionally strong havo/vwo pupil who wants classical languages may move to second-year gymnasium. The pupil then completes a catch-up period in classical languages and culture.
Gymnasium and atheneum start as separate first-year classes. A gymnasium pupil may change to atheneum after the third year. The school also allows later progression from mavo to havo and from havo to atheneum under stated subject conditions.
Muziekplus is an additional three-period weekly music programme with an audition. Matching to the school and selection for Muziekplus are separate decisions. Ask how to list the option for your child’s recommendation.
Dalton is the teaching approach, not a separate qualification. The school uses five principles: responsibility, cooperation, independence, reflection and effective working.
Regular subject lessons remain on the timetable. A daltonuur is a compulsory study period that a pupil books with a teacher. It can be used for subject work, extra explanation, quiet work, collaboration or a special activity.
The current Dalton page says pupils take seven Dalton hours each week and have at least one every day. It distinguishes subject, flexible, quiet and targeted sessions.
The latest school guide linked by the school is still the 2025–26 edition. Its pages 5–6 describe a daily fourth-period Dalton hour plus two afternoon hours. It says the upper-school afternoon hours are optional.
Those descriptions do not fully align for older pupils. Ask whether seven hours are required attendance, available timetable periods or a lower-school rule in the proposed year.
The year is divided into four periods of about nine weeks, and the timetable changes each period. A Dalton study guide sets out topics, independent tasks, deadlines and assessment for each subject.
The bridge year teaches planning explicitly through mentor and study lessons. This matters for a pupil who likes autonomy but has not previously attended a Dalton school.
Spinoza does not make rolling international-school offers. It participates in Amsterdam’s Central Loting en Matching, the central lottery and matching system for secondary schools.
For entry in 2027, the central registration week runs from 25 to 31 March 2027. Families rank compatible schools in the ELK parent portal. If a school is full, the system considers the next preference in lottery-number order.
Placement on one school from a valid preference list is not a guarantee of Spinoza. Put schools in genuine preference order and complete the list required for the pupil’s recommendation.
Children at Dalton primary schools have had no concept-based priority since 2024–25. Wanting Dalton education by itself is also not a sufficient reason for direct placement under the hardship clause.
A pupil from a primary school outside Amsterdam or Amstelveen follows the buitenleerling, or outside-pupil, instructions. ELK issues access after the family supplies the definitive recommendation and identifying details.
A pupil arriving from abroad without a Dutch primary-school recommendation must contact the first-choice secondary school before registration week. That school assesses the appropriate level and confirms it by email for the central application.
The school’s own enrolment page still points to the hardship process for 2026–27. A family considering this narrow route should obtain the 2027–28 dates and evidence requirements from OSVO rather than reuse the old window.
The live FAQ says Spinoza began 2026–27 with eight first-year classes and 230 pupils:

The 2025–26 guide separately reported about 250 pupils across gymnasium education. That was not the number of new gymnasium pupils admitted in one year.
The 230 figure is also not a capacity promise for 2027–28. Check the FAQ again when the new first-year plan is published.
Zij-instroom, or later-year transfer, is separate from first-year matching. The current page covers entry from the second year for 2027–28.
Pre-registration opens on 12 April 2027. A pupil currently at an Amsterdam school must tell that school about the intended move, and the current school prepares a transfer file.
Submitting the form only records interest and creates no right to a place. The school normally knows its vacancies in the final week of the school year, after reports and class allocations.
If space may be available, the school invites the family and pupil to meet before making a final decision. Applicants from abroad or another municipality identify that on the form. Relocating pupils receive priority, but capacity still governs placement.
Do not use this transfer form for a new first-year application. Conversely, a pupil seeking the second year or above should not rely on the March first-year matching route.
The public site presents Spinoza as Dutch-medium and does not advertise a structured newcomer Dutch programme. Amsterdam’s international transition classes, known as ISK, are intended for newcomers with little Dutch.
Every Spinoza class has a mentor and at least one weekly mentor period. Bridge pupils also receive study lessons and two trained older pupils act as mini-mentors.
The school lists support coordinators, a confidential adviser, a pupil coordinator and careers guidance. Its FAQ says it can place pupils with “limited” additional needs and follows Amsterdam’s basic-support standard.
That statement is not a capacity guarantee. Discuss dyslexia, dyscalculia, health, social-emotional needs and any classroom adjustments before central registration. Ask for a written view of whether the available provision fits the child.
Dutch public secondary education does not charge ordinary tuition, and most textbooks are supplied. This is therefore not an international-school fee commitment.
The school’s live cost page lists a voluntary parental contribution of €170 per pupil. It funds activities beyond core education. Foreign trips, exchanges and some excursions are charged separately.
The same page gives examples rather than a complete annual quotation: about €180 for the first-year camp and €890 for the fifth-year gymnasium trip to Greece or Rome. Actual participation and charges depend on year and activity.
The school has an emergency fund that may support a trip, excursion or exchange through a loan or grant. Families must apply in advance.
Separately, government guidance says pupils may join their class’s extra activities even if parents do not pay the voluntary contribution. Ask the school to distinguish voluntary activity contributions from personal equipment costs; applying to its fund is not a substitute for that protection.
For 2026–27, every first-year pupil uses a Chromebook. The school provides digital and printed textbooks and offers a purchase discount, while dictionaries and atlases remain family costs.
The FAQ estimates a new Chromebook at about €265 after a 12% discount and a one-time €50 school contribution. Confirm the current model and net price before ordering.
Choose Spinoza for a Dutch-capable pupil who wants a broad Dutch secondary school and can learn increasing independence. The mixed bridge classes and multiple tracks make later adjustment possible within one school.
Do not choose it as an English-medium alternative to AICS or ISA. Those schools have different eligibility and fees. Spinoza’s main admissions risk is central matching, not an international waitlist.
