Het Dalton Spinoza Lyceum is a Dutch secondary school at Peter van Anrooystraat 8, 1076 BH Amsterdam, in the south of the city. It is a Dalton house: Helen Parkhurst’s plan, as the school’s own Dalton page tells it — freedom with responsibility, cooperation, effectiveness, independence, reflection. It is not an English-medium international. It is not a fee-paying campus in the Geneva sense.
The onderwijs page calls it a broad scholengemeenschap of about 1,315 pupils. The offer is mavo (vmbo-tl), havo, atheneum and gymnasium. Dutch is the classroom. The leaving papers are Dutch papers. If someone in Amsterdam says “Dalton,” this is often the secondary door they mean. The primaries are a different map: many neighbourhood daltonbasisscholen, found through the city’s Schoolwijzer, not one château.
The useful questions are practical. Does this child have a schooladvies of mavo or higher? Can they work in Dutch at secondary pace? Are you ready for centrale aanmelding in March, not an international OpenApply portal? And do you understand that a vrijwillige ouderbijdrage is not an ISA invoice?
Who it is for
The inschrijven page is short and specific. Brugklas applications go through Amsterdam’s central matching. You register in the ELK parent portal after the final primary-school advies. The school points you to schoolkeuze020.nl for how that week actually works. We will not invent a lottery number or a chance.
From 2024–2025, the same page says, children who now sit on a Dalton basisschool no longer have priority for a Dalton VO house such as Spinoza. Do not assume the primary Dalton yard buys the lyceum.
A hardship route exists — the hardheidsclausule — through a central OSVO desk when a family believes one specific VO school is necessary. The school links that process. Confirm it there.
Zij-instroom (joining after the first year) is a different conversation. The schoolgids we read says results from the previous school matter, the sending school’s promotion rules apply, and an intake talk comes first.
It will not fit a child who needs English as the medium from day one. That child is looking at ISA or AICS, which are different climates and different bills.
The campus you can picture
The contact page puts the house at Peter van Anrooystraat, reachable from Station Zuid, tram 24 at Olympiaplein, and several buses. Ask what your fiets or metro looks like at 8:10 in January, not on an open day.
The Dalton page is the Tuesday. Regular subject lessons sit on the timetable. Every day there is also at least one daltonuur — a compulsory period the pupil books. Seven of those hours a week, the school says. Vakdalton for a named subject, flexdalton for work the pupil chooses, stiltedalton for quiet, maatwerkdalton for particular groups. Courses can live in those hours too: a musical, a solar-boat challenge, yoga, lyric-writing. That is the school’s own list, not ours.
The year runs in four periods of about nine weeks. The timetable changes each period. Not every subject sits in every block. Each period comes with a daltonstudiewijzer: topics, independent tasks, what you must know, when work is due, how it is tested. Planning is taught, especially in the brugklas, including a planner the school names (Plenda).
Together with Spinoza20first, Spinoza Lyceum sits in Stichting Spinoza Daltonscholen Amsterdam. Two Dalton secondaries, one foundation. Ask which house you are actually applying to.
How the years are organised
Think in Dutch tracks, not Grades 9–12.
The 2024–2025 schoolgids — the latest full gids we could read as text — describes a one-year brugperiode for the combination classes. Gymnasium and atheneum pupils are placed in those streams from the start. A havo/vwo brugklas is taught at havo level, with extra vwo material for the mixed advice. A mavo/havo brugklas is taught at mavo level. Confirm the live schoolgids; streams move.
Gymnasium, the gids says, is about 250 pupils a year in that stream. The first three gymnasium years are meant to be finished before a later choice of atheneum and Greek and/or Latin. Do not treat that as a promise for this child. Ask.
Upper years choose Dutch profiles — Cultuur en Maatschappij, Economie en Maatschappij, Natuur en Gezondheid, Natuur en Techniek — with the usual Dutch common core. There is a Muziekplus path for havo and vwo that the gids names. We are not inventing an audition date; ask the school.
Inspectie van het Onderwijs publishes an annual opbrengstenkaart. The school points you to onderwijsinspectie.nl. Read that, not a forum rank.
How a child actually gets in
You do not write to an international admissions inbox and wait for a rolling offer.
- Get the definitive basisschooladvies.
- In the March central window, apply through ELK as schoolkeuze020.nl describes.
- List Spinoza if the advice is mavo or higher and the child can work in Dutch.
- Matching and, when needed, lottery sit with the city procedure. The school will not print you a private queue.
Open days live on the school site when they are announced. We will not invent a February evening from an old brochure.
If you are arriving from abroad mid-year, you are a zij-instromer. Write early. Bring reports. Expect Dutch.
Money, as a funded school prints it
OCW funds the school. That is the Dutch sentence. There is no international tuition band.
The 2024–2025 schoolgids printed a voluntary parental contribution of €170 per pupil, set with the parent section of the MR. Children whose parents cannot pay, the gids says, are not excluded from those extra activities. Foreign trips and some excursions sit outside that contribution and are billed separately. A Noodfonds exists for families who cannot meet a trip cost.
That €170 is a 2024–25 figure. Ask for this year’s schoolgids before you treat it as next September. We will not invent a 2026–27 contribution.
Books and a Chromebook sit in the gids as the working kit. Confirm what the school still provides.
What to ask on the stairs
Ask whether the child can follow a Dutch daltonuur in week two, or whether they will still be translating the planner. Ask what happens if Dalton independence is too much, too fast — the onderwijs page says the brugklas teaches the method on purpose, with mentor hours and study lessons. Ask how matching worked last March, not how a parent at dinner remembers 2019. Ask whether you meant this lyceum or Spinoza20first.
Then walk a neighbourhood Dalton basisschool in the same week if the child is six, and AICS or ISA if the child still needs English as the room. Those are different Tuesdays.
What we are not claiming
We are not ranking Spinoza. We are not calling Dalton “progressive” as a mood. We are not inventing a 2026–27 ouderbijdrage, a matching chance, or a waitlist. Confirm inschrijven, schoolkeuze020, and the live schoolgids. This is a map. The lyceum still has to be the right Tuesday.
