City of London School is a selective boys’ day school for ages 10–18. Its main 2027 entry routes are 10+, 11+ and 16+, leading to GCSEs and A levels.
City of London School is an academically selective boys’ day school at 107 Queen Victoria Street, London EC4V 3AL. It admits pupils from Year 6 to Year 13 and does not provide boarding.
The standard entry points are 10+ into Year 6, 11+ into Year 7 and 16+ into Year 12. The school also considers occasional applications for Years 9 and 10 when vacancies arise. It does not admit pupils into Years 11 or 13.
This profile uses the entry pages for September 2027 and the fee page for 2026–27. Those years matter because the school’s older schedules and policy appendices remain online.
The lower-school curriculum includes English, mathematics, sciences, humanities, classical and modern languages, arts, technology and physical education. Pupils narrow their choices before taking GCSEs, the subject qualifications normally completed at age 16.
Sixth Form pupils normally choose three A levels plus the Extended Project Qualification, or four A levels. A levels are advanced subject qualifications; the project qualification involves independent research. The current subject list includes sciences, humanities, creative subjects, languages, mathematics and Further Mathematics. Availability depends on demand.
Mathematics and Further Mathematics count as two choices. A pupil taking both must choose two other subjects, rather than adding only one subject and the Extended Project Qualification.
Modern-language courses are intended for non-native speakers. Families should check the detailed subject conditions before choosing a Sixth Form combination.
City+ brings Sixth Form pupils together with City of London School for Girls for some courses and activities. This does not change City of London School’s boys-only admissions policy.
| Route | Eligible birth dates | Registration deadline | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10+, Year 6 | 1 September 2016–31 August 2017 | 2 November 2026 | 25 November 2026 |
| 11+, Year 7 | 1 September 2015–31 August 2016 | 2 November 2026 | 27 November 2026 |
| 16+, Year 12 | 1 September 2010–31 August 2011 | 25 September 2026 | See the date conflict below |
The 10+ assessment combines a 105-minute online paper with a 30-minute handwritten creative-writing task. Shortlisted applicants return for an individual interview and group activity in January 2027. Offers are due in early February.
The 11+ assessment covers English, mathematics, reasoning, creative comprehension, puzzles and creative writing. Interviews take place in January 2027. The school expects to issue offers in mid-February, with acceptance in early March.
Applicants with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) may be assessed on a different day when access arrangements require this. Families must disclose the need and submit the requested evidence when registering.
The 16+ page contains conflicting dates. Its headline timetable gives assessment on 6 October 2026, interviews in November and offers on 1 December. A detailed section lower down gives assessment on 2 November.
The bursary page also uses 6 October for assessment, but gives 2 December for offers. A family applying at 16+ should obtain the operative timetable from Admissions before making travel plans.
The 16+ process includes an online assessment and papers in the proposed A-level subjects. Shortlisted applicants have an interview, and the school requests a confidential reference.
The published academic minimum is six full-course GCSE or international GCSE (IGCSE) grades at 8 or 9. Applicants also need at least grade 7 in English Language and mathematics and grades 8 or 9 in intended A-level subjects.
Home or native languages, short courses and vocational BTEC qualifications do not count towards the six grades. Applicants following another qualification system should ask how the school will assess equivalence.
Occasional places are limited to Years 9 and 10 and depend on vacancies. For 2027 Year 9 entry, families can submit the school’s interest form. The school may invite assessments during the applicant’s Year 8.
An invitation is not guaranteed. The process normally includes English and mathematics assessments, an interview and a confidential current-school reference. French remains compulsory through the end of Year 9.
At every entry point, results are considered alongside the interview or group activity and the current-school report. The school may keep suitable applicants on an unranked reserve list.
A place is not awarded simply because a sibling attends this school, City of London School for Girls or City Junior School. Siblings complete the same selection process as other applicants.
Overseas assessment is available only in exceptional circumstances. The admissions policy lists an additional £300 including VAT for such an arrangement.
Admission remains academically selective. An applicant with SEND must meet the academic standard and be able to access the site and curriculum with reasonable adjustments.
Families must disclose known needs at registration. The school may request a recent specialist or medical report and a letter from the current school’s special educational needs coordinator.
The school can provide individual learning profiles, one-to-one or group interventions and exam access arrangements when evidence supports them. External assessments and exceptional specialist provision may create additional family costs.
The admissions policy says the school cannot provide highly specialised or intensive treatment. Families should discuss the required provision before applying, especially when an Education, Health and Care Plan or regular external therapy is involved.
English is the teaching language. The school identifies pupils who may need English as an additional language support, but it publishes no entry threshold or separate support fee.
The current fee page publishes these 2026–27 amounts:
| Charge | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition, including VAT | £9,848.40 per term |
| Three-term tuition calculation | £29,545.20 per year |
| Individual music lessons, including VAT | £429.60 per term |
The admissions policy lists a non-refundable registration fee of £192 including VAT for a standard entry point. Non-standard entry or other complex admission arrangements cost £300 including VAT.
An Acceptance Fee is also due. It combines a non-refundable admission charge, a refundable deposit and an advance against the first term’s fees. The current public website does not state the amounts.
For 16+ entry, the policy says part is paid when the offer is accepted. A full term’s fee then becomes payable after GCSE results confirm the place and before the autumn term.
The latest complete fee schedule available publicly is for 2024–25. Its acceptance charges, lunch cost and late-payment rate should not be used as current prices. Ask for the schedule attached to the 2027 offer.
The public contract also permits separate charges for lunches, trips, public examinations and additional support. Their current prices are not published together on the 2026–27 fee page.
Transformational bursaries are available for 11+ and 16+ entry. They are means-tested, competitive and reviewed each year. An award may cover some or all tuition.
Families must request bursary consideration on the registration form. The school says it cannot add a bursary application after registration.
The child must have the right to live and study in the United Kingdom. The child and at least one parent must normally have lived in the country continuously for two years.
The family must live inside the M25 orbital motorway around London when applying and throughout the award. Applicants already at an independent school normally qualify only when they hold a substantial means-tested bursary there.
Awards of at least 95% fee remission can include lunch, travel, public-exam fees, a uniform contribution and specified trips. The bursary guide explains the limits and annual financial review.
Academic, music and sports prizes have a fee-remission value of £35. Some music awards also cover tuition for one or two instruments. These prizes are separate from means-tested bursaries.
The public Parent Contract is dated September 2020, so families should compare it with the version supplied with an offer. Its main financial rules are still important questions for Admissions.
Late notice normally creates liability for one term’s fees. For a current pupil, withdrawal requires a full term’s written notice or one term’s fees instead. Absence does not normally reduce tuition.
This is a day school. The admissions policy says an overseas family would normally relocate, and the school does not arrange guardians. A suitable guardian is required if the family is not resident in the United Kingdom.
The Parent Contract says a pupil should live with a parent during term. It also requires a responsible adult when a parent will be away. Families considering another arrangement should obtain written approval before accepting a place.
The City of London Corporation can sponsor an accepted pupil for a Child Student visa when the care arrangement is suitable. The family pays the associated cost, but the amount is not published.

5 minStart with your child’s needs and the schools you can realistically access. A boys’, girls’, or co-educational label does not tell you enough about teaching, friendships, support, or daily life.
7 minStart with the qualification your child would actually receive. Then check its subjects, language demands, and recognition in the countries where they may study next.
