Curricolo come lo pubblica la scuola:French national curriculum · Baccalauréat · EsaBac (Franco-Italian double diploma from Seconde)
Lingue di istruzione:French, Italian as a taught language for every pupil
Lycée français Chateaubriand is a French AEFE school in Rome — an établissement en gestion directe, not a British or American international. The official site is lycee-chateaubriand.eu. Founded in 1903 by Monseigneur Charles Dumaz. The historique page says it schools about 1,500 pupils across three Rome sites. Treat that as the school’s own snapshot, not a census we counted.
It is a day school. There is no boarding house. The AEFE financial regulation that covers Rome also covers École française Alexandre Dumas in Naples (Via Francesco Crispi 86). That is a sister EGD, not a Roman campus. Do not tour Naples and call it this child’s Tuesday.
This is not St. Stephen’s on the Aventine, not St George’s at La Storta, and not AOSR on Via Cassia. Four official doors. Four papers. One city.
The useful questions are: Do you want the French Bac, not IB or A-Levels? Can both parents live in Italy during term? Which of the three Roman gates will this child actually use? And have you added demi-pension — obligatory from maternelle through Troisième — to the first-year sum?
Who it is for
Families who want a French national week from petite section through Terminale, and who can accept a day school whose parents, the admissions page says, must reside in Italy during the school period. Nationality does not waive the bill. The financial regulation is blunt: schooling in an AEFE house is payante for every pupil, whatever the passport.
It will not suit a family hunting an English-medium IB corridor, or a posting that still lives in another country on weekdays. If you need A-Levels, walk St George’s. If you need an American diploma, walk AOSR. If you need boarding beds, walk St. Stephen’s.
Italian is taught from maternelle through lycée. Until Troisième, every child with at least one Italian-citizen parent must follow Lingua e Cultura Nazionale (LCN), under the 1949 Franco-Italian cultural agreements. From Seconde those pupils choose LCN or EsaBac — the Franco-Italian double diploma (Esame di Stato plus Baccalauréat). That is a legal thread, not a club option.
We will not repeat “prestigieux” as our ranking. It is a French house on three Roman gates. Walk them.
The campus you can actually picture
Three sites, two neighbourhoods.
Strohl-Fern, Via di Villa Ruffo 31, 00196 — in the park of Villa Borghese. Petite section through 4e. The historique page gives the park site 8 hectares and more than a thousand pupils from maternelle to quatrième. Lodge hours the contact page prints: 07:00–19:00, Monday to Friday, outside holidays.
Malpighi, Via Malpighi 11, 00161 — Troisième and Seconde. About fifty metres from Patrizi. Bought in the late 1980s, the historique says.
Patrizi, Via di Villa Patrizi 9, 00161 — near Porta Pia. The historic villa, owned since 1921. 1ère and Terminale, plus direction, intendance, the lycée vie scolaire, the CDI, and the science pole. Lodge hours for Patrizi/Malpighi: 07:30–19:30. Standard Rome switchboard: +39 06 44 16 041.
The historique says Patrizi and Malpighi together make more than 2,500 m² and hold about 500 pupils. Time Villa Borghese at 7:40 in January, then Porta Pia. They are not one gate.

How the years are organised
French years: petite section through Terminale. Petite section: children who turn 3 by 31 December of the enrolment year. Cours préparatoire: children who turn 6 by 31 December.
Pupils arriving from a French school — public, private, or AEFE-recognised — keep the promotion decision of the sending school. Pupils arriving from a school the French ministry does not recognise as French sit a placement test. The school communicates the result after the test. We will not invent the paper or the pass mark.
Spécialités and optional groups in collège and lycée are formed only if a minimum number of pupils enrol. Ask which groups actually run this year.
Cantine is obligatory from maternelle through Troisième. The school may propose timetable changes. Annual tuition and canteen are billed each quarter.
How a child actually gets in
Pre-enrolment for 2026–2027 is online only, on the French version of the platform. A completed file is a request, not a place. Incomplete dossiers are not considered. Acceptance of one child does not accept siblings. Confirmation for élémentaire through Terminale waits on the last report showing promotion.
After a yes, families pay droits de première inscription (DPI). Enrolment becomes effective when the school receives them. DPI is once for the whole stay, and not refundable.
Documents the Italian tariffs page names: birth extract, child’s ID, codice fiscale, both responsible adults’ IDs, custody papers if separated, current-year attendance certificate (not for petite section), last year’s reports, this year’s reports when they exist, and IBANs for both responsible adults.
We will not invent a waitlist, a CAT4, or a January deadline the pages do not print.
Money, as the AEFE decision prints it for 2026–27
Décision n° 3.7/2026/2027, displayed in the school on 12 March 2026. Rome and Naples tariffs were harmonised. The decision says annual tuition rose 17% in Rome (and 8–10% in Naples, by level). Confirm the live PDF before you budget.

Exam rights exist on the same decision (Brevet, épreuves anticipées, Bac). For a pupil already in the house the Brevet line prints €140. Ask the secretariat for the live exam line that applies to this child.
Sibling abatement on tuition and DPI, when one legal responsible enrols at least three children: 10% for three, 20% for four, 30% for five or more — applied to all those children. Local-contract staff at 50% or more service, with no other employer cover, get an 80% exemption on those same rights. AEFE résidents and détachés whose tuition is already taken in charge do not stack a further abatement.
A parent association has written about later AEFE years. That is not the official 2026–27 table. We print the decision. We do not forecast 2027.
What we are not claiming
We are not ranking Chateaubriand against St. Stephen’s, St George’s, or AOSR. We are not inventing a waitlist, a placement-test score, or a canteen figure beyond the official meal table. We are not calling Naples a Rome campus. We are not treating “prestigieux” as a result.
Stairs questions
Ask which site this child stands in next September — Borghese park or Porta Pia. Ask how much Italian a new eight-year-old really meets before the first contrôle. Ask whether EsaBac will actually run for this cohort. Ask what happens if a spécialité group does not form. Time both neighbourhoods on a wet Tuesday. The cantine is the honest tour.
The Rome hub is the short map. The Italy country page is the wider one.
