Curricolo come lo pubblica la scuola:European Schools curriculum · European Baccalaureate
Lingue di istruzione:Section language as first language (L1), plus L2 and further languages as the European Schools prescribe
The European School Munich is a Type 1 European School, not a private IB campus and not Munich International School or Bavarian International School. The official site is esmunich.de. Two sites, both in the south-east of the city: Fasangarten for kindergarten and primary, Neuperlach for secondary.
It is a day school. There is no boarding house. The parents’ association is ev-esm.org. School buses sit with that association. We will not invent a bus figure.
The EURSC location page names the Director Anton Hrovath. Kindergarten and primary: Simona Cajhen. Secondary: Martin Duggen. Finance: Andreas Wallrodt. Phone on that page: +49 89 62 81 63 01. Secondary enrolment: LIST-MUN-SECRETARIAT-SECONDARY-CYCLE@eursc.eu.
The school’s own forty-year brochure says it was founded in 1977 at the request of the European Patent Office, first as kindergarten and primary in the French lycée on Berlepschstraße. Treat later headcounts from old PDFs as history, not this year’s census.
A July 2026 home-page note says more than 200 pupils received the European Baccalaureate at the 2026 proclamation. That is one ceremony the school published, not a league table.
The useful questions are: Are you Category I at the EPO or an EU institution? Which language section is this child’s dominant language? Can you live with Fasangarten and Neuperlach, not a Starnberg Schloss? And do you understand that the leaving paper is the European Baccalaureate, not the IB?
Who it is for
Category I — entitled, and fee-exempt: children of employees of the European Patent Office in Munich, of the EU, and of the school’s own teachers and administrative and ancillary staff. They have to be admitted.
Category II: children under individual agreements, each with its own rights and fees. Ask the school what that agreement actually is. We will not invent a company list.
Category III: everyone else. Admitted to a limited extent under the ESM policy the Board of Governors approved in December 2023 (document 2023-09-D-44-en-3). The Director decides inside the regular intake.
It will not suit a family who wants English-only IB at Schloss Buchhof or Haimhausen. Those are MIS and BIS. Walk all three if the posting is Munich. They share an airport and almost no Tuesday.
The campus you can actually picture
Fasangarten — kindergarten and primary. Postal address Auguste-Kent-Platz 3, 81549 Munich. Kindergarten also prints Cincinnatistr. 81. School buses and suppliers arrive from the north, Lincolnstraße 94. Nearest S-Bahn: Fasangarten (S3). The school recommends public transport or the parents’ association bus.
Neuperlach — secondary. Elise-Aulinger-Straße 21, 81739 Munich. Bus 55, stop Putzbrunnerstraße; U5 Therese-Giehse-Allee, exit toward Putzbrunnerstraße. Visitor parking or Putzbrunnerstraße.
Time both gates at 7:40 in January. MIS families are timing a Starnberg lake road. BIS families are timing Haimhausen or Schwabing. They are not this U-Bahn.
We will not invent a hectare count the public pages do not print. Ask to see this child’s section, not only the European flag.
How the years are organised
Kindergarten, primary, secondary, to the European Baccalaureate at the end of S7. Kindergarten: September of the calendar year the child turns 4, a two-year cycle. Primary 1: the year they turn 6. Primary lasts five years.
Most teaching is in the child’s dominant language. Primary adds a first foreign language. From S1, a third language. Later, optional fourth and fifth. From S3, Language 2 becomes the language of human sciences, history, geography, economics, religion and ethics — that is the European Schools language policy, named on the 2026 subject-choice note.
The school says it is the only Munich house where the official languages of all EU countries are taught by native-speaking teachers. That is L1 and SWALS weather, not a promise that every language has its own full section through S7. The German-section page says there are German departments in kindergarten, primary and secondary, and that the school will usually test German. L3 choices the 2026 secondary note names: German, English, French, Italian or Spanish. Irish or Maltese nationals may take Gaelic or Maltese as options. Ask which section actually exists for this child this year. We will not copy an anniversary brochure as a 2026 section list.
How a child actually gets in
Start with the online declaration of interest. The school says it will contact you. Category I is a right. Category III is a leftover-place story. A tour of Fasangarten does not move a Category III file.
The German-section page asks for the child’s full name, date of birth, dominant language, and the name of the employer. That last line is the category question in another font.
We will not invent a December–February window, a waiting list, or a CAT4 the pages do not print. Confirm this year’s intake dates with the secretariat.
Money, as the school fees page prints it for 2026/27
Fees for Category III are set each year by the Board of Governors. Category I is exempt.

- Second child: 80% of that child’s own cycle fee
- Third child and after: 60% of that child’s own cycle fee
Payment
- By 30 June 2026: in full, or at least 25%. Admission that year is only possible if the 25% is not late. The prepayment cannot be refunded.
- By 31 October 2026: the remaining 75%, plus “other fees” the page names — photocopies, insurance, Baccalaureate exam fee. Those extra lines are not printed as euros. We will not invent them.
Already enrolled children must be deregistered in writing by 15 May or the deposit for the next year is due.
A reduction can be asked of the Director. Income limits, the page says, are very low. The floor is still 25% of the regular fee.
We will not invent canteen or bus. Ask the parents’ association.
What we are not claiming
We are not ranking ESM against MIS or BIS. We are not inventing a Category II company list. We are not treating “more than 200” Baccalaureate certificates as a medal. We are not copying a 40-year brochure as this year’s language-section map. We are not inventing photocopy or insurance euros.
Stairs questions
Ask which category you actually are, in writing, with an employer letter if you have one. Ask which section the Director will assign. Ask which building this child stands in — Fasangarten or Neuperlach — and how the S3 or U5 feels at 7:40. Time Starnberg and Haimhausen in the same week if you are also walking the IB castles. They are different childhoods that share an airport.
The Munich hub is the short map. European Schools versus internationals is the climate. The Germany country page names Frankfurt’s European School as the other Bavarian-and-Rhine-Main pairing.
