It is a day school. There is no boarding house. If the posting has not found a flat, this school will not absorb the child.

The useful questions are: Are you Category I, II, or III? Which language section is this child’s dominant language — German, English or French — not the language you wish they had? And do you understand that the leaving paper is the European Baccalaureate, not the IB?
The European Schools were set up, the admissions page says, primarily for children of employees of EU institutions. Everyone else applies into remaining places.
Category I — children of staff in the service of European Community institutions for at least one year. Fee-exempt on the Board table. Confirm the employer letter.
Category II — a corporation or institution with an agreement with ESK. The school says families may also sign an agreement so the child can be admitted this way. The 2026/27 Board table prints a new-contract Karlsruhe line of €16,746.59. The current-contract cell is still tba. Ask which contract this employer actually has.
Category III — other families, after I and II, if places remain. The Director must keep seats free so later Category I and II arrivals do not split a class. The school’s 2025/26 information sheet still says Category III sits on a waiting list. The Board table for 2026/27 is the fee. Ask how Karlsruhe is treating Category III this year. We will not invent a seat.
It will not suit a family who only want English IB in the Rhine valley. Walk an international if that is the paper. They share a region and almost no Monday.
One Karlsruhe address, north of the centre, not a Schloss. Nursery from the September the child turns 4. Primary 1 the year they turn 6. Secondary is seven years, usually 8:05–15:40, the structure page says, ending in the European Baccalaureate after twelve school years. Study trips in years 3 and 6. Three guidance advisers.
Time Albert-Schweitzer-Strasse at the hour you would actually travel. Frankfurt Praunheim and Munich Fasangarten are not a Karlsruhe Tuesday.
Three sections from nursery through the Baccalaureate, as the language pages print them: German, English, French. L1 is the section language. Children whose dominant language is another EU tongue sit as SWALS in one of those three sections and may, under conditions, keep mother-tongue L1. L2 from primary 1: German, English or French. L3 from secondary 1. L4 optional from S4, L5 from S6.
The nursery page: parents of bilingual children choose the section; the child stays in it at primary. One afternoon a week is European Hours — songs and games across the three section languages.
Place the child in the language they actually live in. A wish is not a section.
Apply online. Forms exist in EN, FR and DE. Children arriving mid-career go into the year that matches the home-country level, normally in the dominant-language section, and may sit a placement test. The 2026 English application form we opened: the file is processed only after a €200 registration fee, except for families whose employer is already contracted with ESK. Incomplete files are not processed. The place is not definite until the Director writes, and not before the file is complete under the General Rules.

French-section families: AEFE bourses scolaires may apply. The admissions page points to the French embassy in Germany. That is not a Category I exemption.
Category I pays no Board tuition.
The official 2026/27 table lives at eursc.eu/en/european-schools/enrolments/school-fees. The Secretary-General marks the figures for guidance only and tells you to confirm with the school.

Older Category III pupils enrolled before 2013/14 sit a lower Board line. Ask which column this child is in.
ESK’s own information sheet is still labelled 2025/2026. It prints different Category III euros and a Category II figure of €15,443.17 “with new financing agreement.” It also prints a non-refundable 25% partial invoice before the year, a second invoice in autumn, and a social-hardship reduction for Category III that never goes below 25% of the regular fee. Those 2025/26 mechanics may still be how Karlsruhe invoices. We will not reprint the old euro lines as if they were 2026/27. Open both documents. Trust the later official number.
The 2026 form: the first partial invoice is never refunded. No reduction in the year of first admission. Administration and swimming-pool charges are due for the whole year.
The European Baccalaureate. This is not the IB and not the Abitur, even though some German pages still say Abiturienten out of habit. If a later faculty will want a particular paper, ask with this child’s subjects and section.
Ask the category in the week the posting is real. Ask which section is the child’s dominant language. Ask whether a Category III place exists this year, and whether Karlsruhe is still keeping a waiting list. Ask which fee document — the 2026/27 Board table or the 2025/26 school sheet — will be on the first invoice. Ask what the €200 registration fee becomes if the Director says no.
We are not ranking Karlsruhe against Frankfurt or Munich. We are not guessing a waitlist.
Read the live Board fees page and ask ESK which sheet they will invoice from before you resign a flat. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
