Choosing a school in Porto: Cambridge or IB

For an English-medium search in Porto, compare CLIP—Oporto International School with Oporto British School. Both use British-style schooling, but the final two years are an important distinction.

CLIP is on Rua de Vila Nova. Its adapted English curriculum progresses through Cambridge IGCSE to A levels and the Cambridge AICE Diploma. AICE groups Cambridge subject qualifications; it is not an IB programme.

Oporto British School is on Rua da Cerca in Foz. It also progresses through IGCSE, but its senior course is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Choose the comparison according to the child’s intended subjects and likely next education system, not simply the word “British.”

For a younger pupil, ask how Portuguese is taught and how language support changes with age. If the family expects to stay, include a Portuguese school leading towards national secondary qualifications. An English-medium school is not the only route to university abroad.

Availability and full cost

CLIP’s reviewed 2026–27 admissions page marked several year groups as waitlisted. Ask for the current position in the exact form; a waitlist is not a place. Its payment policy does not replace a full annual tuition quotation.

OBS publishes a 2026–27 fee schedule with a €745 capital charge. Ask which recurring and first-year charges apply to your child, and add meals, transport and activities where excluded.

Test both journeys from the intended home. Rua de Vila Nova and Foz are separate locations; do not turn a school-quoted walk or drive into a guaranteed commute.
