Helsinki schools, a choice not a promotion

Helsinki is not “the international school.” It is a Finnish capital where peruskoulu is the ordinary Monday, and six official doors posting families name in the first week.

The portraits we have are the International School of Helsinki in Ruoholahti, The English School in Meilahti and Pitäjänmäki, Deutsche Schule Helsinki on Malminkatu, Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu — SYK — on Isonnevantie, Helsingin ranskalais-suomalainen koulu — HRSK — on Raumantie, and Ressun lukio on Kalevankatu and Ruoholahdenkatu. Six climates, one capital

ISH sits at Selkämerenkatu 11 in Ruoholahti. Finland’s first full IB continuum: PYP, MYP, Diploma, plus an ISH high-school diploma. English in the classroom. Finnish is a legal obligation if the child is a Finnish citizen — the portrait explains the school’s own sentence. This is a fee-paying international, not a neighbourhood peruskoulu. The English School is a Finnish private school that teaches in Finnish and English and finishes with the national ylioppilastutkinto, not an IB continuum. Preschool to Grade 6 at Mäntytie 14, Meilahti; Grades 7–9 and lukio at Valimotie in Pitäjänmäki. The year fee the pages print is a private-school charge, not a Geneva invoice. Do not tour it as if it were ISH with a cheaper bill.

Deutsche Schule Helsinki is the German official Auslandsschule, a Finnish private Begegnungsschule. German and Finnish tracks, kindergarten on two sites, Grades 1–12 on Malminkatu. The leaving paper is the Deutsches Internationales Abitur, which the school treats as a German Abitur and a Finnish matriculation. The semester fee the pages print includes lunch. It is not ISH and not The English School.

SYK sits at Isonnevantie 8 in Etelä-Haaga. A Finnish private sopimuskoulu from grade 3, national lukio and IB. The introduction page says it does not charge pupil fees. That is a different Tuesday from ISH’s international invoice and from DSH’s private-school semester fee. The 2026 IB door runs through Opintopolku. It is a day school. It will not take a child who arrives in Finland alone.

HRSK sits at Raumantie 4 in Munkkivuori. A Finnish state language school — Finnish and French, ylioppilastutkinto, not the French Bac and not AEFE. The 2026 introduction PDFs say teaching is maksuton. Afternoon care after esikoulu is paid; we will not invent that euro. The grade-1 door for 2026 is a January language test. The lukio page still prints placeholder dates for 2027. It is not ISH and not SYK.

Ressun lukio is a City of Helsinki upper secondary: Finnish line at Kalevankatu 8–10, IB line at Ruoholahdenkatu 23. Two hundred Finnish-line places, 120 IB preparatory places, Opintopolku, no boarding. For most families it is still free. From 1 August 2026 the city prints €10,600 / €14,000 for third-country students on a residence permit for studies. ISH and European School applicants sit in the discretionary IB quota. It is not ISH with a municipal invoice.

They share a tram map and almost no Tuesday. One is fee-paying IB. One is a Finnish bilingual private school. One is a German official house. One is a Finnish private with no pupil fee and an IB line. One is a Finnish state bilingual with free teaching. One is a city lukio with a Finnish paper and an IB paper. Walk at least two, then a peruskoulu if you might stay.

The Finnish city is the other school

If you might stay, an English-medium diploma is not automatically the kindest paper. A neighbourhood peruskoulu, a Finnish lukio, a Swedish-medium municipal house — those are official mornings. Many local families never tour ISH. That is not a slight. It is the default.

The language of the yard is the test that matters more than the flags. A child can thrive in English at 9 a.m. and still be lonely at 11 if the park is speaking Finnish — or the other way around, if you chose a Finnish school and the child still translates every joke.

Stay, leave, or a Sunday elsewhere

If you will leave, ask how universities outside Finland read the diploma you are buying — IB, ylioppilastutkinto, or DIA. If you will stay, ask how universities here read the English-medium paper, and whether extra Finnish is required.

Espoo keeps its own time. Espoo International School on Opinmäki is a City of Espoo comprehensive — English-medium, Finnish national curriculum, IB MYP in grades 7–9, 2026–27 city windows. It is not ISH. Do not flatten the capital region into Ruoholahti plus a summer cottage.

Housing and the gate have become the same conversation. That is not a reason to tour seven campuses. Name the paper, the language after lunch, and the tram you can actually live with.

What to ask on the stairs

Ask whether this child is a Finnish citizen, and what that does to language lessons at ISH. Ask what The English School’s €673 year fee actually covers, and what the third-country lukio charge is from August 2026. Ask DSH which track — German or Finnish — this child would actually stand in. Ask SYK whether this is a grade-3 language file or an IB Opintopolku file — those are not the same Tuesday. Ask HRSK whether this is an esikoulu January test or a lukio file, and do not call it AEFE. Ask Ressu whether this is a Kalevankatu Finnish file or a Ruoholahdenkatu IB file, and which third-country box applies.

Walk Ruoholahti, Meilahti, Malminkatu, Etelä-Haaga, Munkkivuori and Kalevankatu on an ordinary Tuesday, not only in June light. The välipala is the honest tour.
