PBC and CBC are fee-paying Catholic boys’ day schools following the Irish curriculum. Compare their admissions rules, current costs and practical journeys before choosing.
Presentation Brothers College, or PBC, and Christian Brothers College, or CBC, are both Catholic boys’ day schools. They follow Ireland’s Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate route, not the International Baccalaureate.
These two profiles cover part of Cork’s fee-paying sector, not every good school in the city. A family seeking co-education, a girls’ school or tuition-free secondary education should broaden the search. The Ireland guide gives the wider system context.
CBC’s admissions page says entry does not depend on an entrance examination or aptitude test. It guarantees secondary entry to pupils of its own preparatory school.
The page also says many entrants are local, attend established feeder schools or have family connections. That describes the intake; it does not by itself prove that an overseas newcomer is ineligible. Ask how the formal admissions policy prioritises an external applicant if the school is oversubscribed.
PBC publishes its own annual notice and timetable. Do not assume that applying to CBC covers PBC, or that either school can promise a mid-year place. Send the child’s current year, expected arrival date and previous school reports to each admissions office.
PBC’s 2027–28 notice gives the following First Year timetable:
That is a short acceptance period. Read the notice and clarify the payment procedure before offers are issued.
As of 4 September 2026, CBC’s linked annual notice still covered entry in 2026–27. Request its 2027–28 notice rather than moving last year’s dates forward yourself.
Neither public admissions page reviewed provides a current tuition amount. Ask both schools for the same academic year, including compulsory levies, books, examination costs and optional activities.
PBC’s payment schedule explains payment arrangements rather than quoting tuition. It says the non-refundable acceptance deposit is credited towards the first year’s fee. It is not an additional tuition charge, although it is cash due earlier. Ask for the current amount and withdrawal conditions.
PBC is on the Mardyke; CBC is on Sidney Hill, Wellington Road. Test the home-to-school journey and the collection arrangements after activities. For a pupil entering the senior years, compare available subjects, Transition Year and language support before weighing facilities.
If boarding is essential, neither school meets that need. Midleton College, east of Cork city, is a co-educational day-and-boarding alternative worth investigating separately.
The Cork hub links both detailed profiles. Use the admissions policy and current school quotation, rather than an old directory price, for the final comparison.
Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.

Start with the qualification your child would actually receive. Then check its subjects, language demands, and recognition in the countries where they may study next.
7 minStart with your child and the family's likely plans. Define the non-negotiables, verify the school's claims, compare three realistic options and visit with specific questions.
7 minTuition is only one line of the budget. Separate charges from advance payments, record what each figure includes, and ask the school to confirm your calculation in writing.
7 minA useful visit should help you picture your child’s school day and resolve the questions that matter to your family. Ask for concrete examples, then separate what you observed from what you were told.
