Clane is a town in north County Kildare, west of Dublin and between Naas and Maynooth. It works as a commuter base for families who want more space than the city offers while keeping Dublin within reach. Clongowes Wood College, which describes its campus as about 30 km from Dublin, is just outside the town.
Getting to Dublin and the airport
Clane has no railway station. The nearest is Sallins and Naas, a few kilometres south, served by Irish Rail trains to Dublin Heuston and by the commuter service to Grand Canal Dock. Clane is also served by Go-Ahead Ireland’s 120 family of bus routes into Dublin. Check current timetables with the Transport for Ireland journey planner from your actual address.
Dublin Airport is the arrival point for boarding families from abroad. Clongowes’ UK admissions page puts the school about 25 miles from the airport. Ask the school how boys travel at the start and end of term and at each leave, rather than assuming a school transfer.
How the local system works
Education in Ireland is compulsory from age 6 to 16, or until a pupil has completed three years of post-primary school, whichever is later. Most children attend state-funded schools. Primary school covers eight years. Post-primary runs from the three-year Junior Cycle, through a Transition Year that some schools make compulsory, to the two-year Leaving Certificate.
There is no central allocation of places. Each school publishes its own admission policy and an annual admissions notice with its application dates. For First Year entry, application windows usually fall in the school year before the child starts, so a moving family should read each school’s notice early rather than wait for a house move. In Clane itself, Scoil Mhuire Community School is the co-educational post-primary school.
Irish is a normal part of the curriculum in Irish schools. A child who has been educated abroad may qualify for an exemption from the study of Irish under the Department’s criteria; ask the school to check eligibility before enrolment.
The school near Clane
Clongowes Wood College is a Catholic Jesuit secondary school for boys in which every pupil boards seven days a week. It suits a family that wants full boarding in a Jesuit school and can plan for First Year admission well in advance. It is the wrong choice for a family living in Clane who wants their son home each evening, or for daughters. The profile covers the admissions notice, later places, fees and the deposit.
Alternatives to compare
Choose Clane as a home if a parent commutes to Dublin or the Kildare towns and the children will attend local or Dublin day schools. Choose Clongowes only if full boarding is the point, not because the family lives nearby. The Ireland guide explains the Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Leaving Certificate.
