International School of Bologna and Liceo Classico Statale Marco Minghetti meet different needs.
ISB is a private English-medium day school from age three through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. It also teaches Italian from Grade 1. It is the more relevant choice for a young child or a pupil who needs continuity in an English IB programme.
Minghetti is a state liceo classico, an upper-secondary school with substantial Latin and Greek alongside the other Italian curriculum subjects. It leads to the Italian maturità. It is relevant for a teenager ready to study in Italian who wants a classical academic education, not for a primary-age child needing English.
Confirm the building as well as the school
ISB’s current teaching address is Via della Libertà 2. Its new Zola Predosa campus is planned for September 2027. Ask which grades are moving and what the timetable means for a home chosen now.
Minghetti has three sites: Via Nazario Sauro, Vicolo Stradellaccio and Via Ca’ Selvatica. Confirm the actual site for the year group. A central administrative address is not sufficient for planning daily travel.
Admissions and complete cost
ISB publishes an open day for 23 September 2026. Ask about year-group availability, language assessment and support. Its 2026–27 table separates annual tuition, annual registration and a one-time admission charge. Lunch is compulsory through Grade 5 and must be added to the budget.
Minghetti’s first-year applications for 2026–27 went through the national Unica system. The original 14 February deadline was extended nationally to 21 February 2026. That campaign has closed. Ask about a transfer or the next published intake rather than assuming a September vacancy.
Minghetti’s €120 contribution for 2026–27 is voluntary, not private-school tuition. Textbooks, trips and other costs still deserve a separate question.
Compare both daily journeys and the child’s realistic language needs. For younger children who may stay in Italy, include local primary schools in the search. The Bologna hub, Italy guide and detailed profiles provide official sources.
Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
