Highgate School is a co-educational independent day school in Highgate village, north London. It is a registered charity, number 312765. The school names four entry points — 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+ — and says that across all of them, demand is high. Selection is academic: a short online application, then an assessment or an interview.
This is a different Tuesday from Westminster beside the Abbey, from St Paul’s on the Barnes river, and from the Dulwich pair. Families who want a north-London mixed day house often walk Highgate in the same week as a central or west-London independent. The Heath is up the road. The commute is still the first question.
The useful questions are: Can this child be known across several N6 sites? Are you applying at 4+, 7+, 11+ or 16+ — they are different doors? And does a means-tested bursary, which the school says can cover up to 100% of fees at 7+, 11+ and 16+, belong in the first envelope?
Who it is for
Families who want a mixed day independent from Reception to Year 13 without boarding. Families who can reach Highgate on the Northern line, a local bus, or the school’s paid bus for Junior and Senior pupils. Families who understand that “occasional places” in other year groups depend on numbers — the school says it sometimes offers them.
It will not board anyone. If you need an IB campus or an American diploma, walk Southbank or ASL. If you need a girls’ house, walk St Paul’s Girls’ School.
The campus you can actually picture
The location page splits the buildings, all within walking distance:
Senior School — North Road, N6 4AY, and Southwood Lane, N6 5EE. Historic village buildings plus modern extensions. Sixth form lessons in Dyne House on Southwood Lane, with sixth-form common rooms.
Junior School — Bishopswood Road, N6 4PL. Reopened in a new building in 2016: atrium, hall, art and DTE studios, music and drama, science labs, library.
Pre-Prep — Bishopswood Road, N6 4PH. Own dining hall and library, outdoor play, Forest School and the sports centre across the road.
Mallinson Sports Centre sits on Bishopswood Road: 25-metre pool, indoor and outdoor sport. The Mills Centre holds art, design, photography and an engineering workshop. The school says it has 23 acres in and around Highgate and Hampstead.
Ask to see Pre-Prep and Dyne House if those are your years, not only the village front. The school encourages public transport; it also names a paid bus for Junior and Senior pupils serving local areas, including toward Crouch End, Muswell Hill, East Finchley, West Hampstead and Archway on the location copy. Confirm today’s routes on the travelling-to-us page.
How the years are organised
Pre-Prep (4+) — Reception to Year 2.
Junior (7+) — Years 3–6.
Senior (11+) — Years 7–13 on the fees table; sixth form is also a 16+ entry.
The fees page quotes the 2024 ISI report: a comprehensive curriculum, high levels of scholarship, and a design that lets pupils study beyond age-related expectations. That is the inspectorate’s sentence as the school reprints it, not a league table.
GCSE and A-level live here. Exam-success pages exist for senior and sixth form. We will not reprint a percentage as a promise.
How a child actually gets in
Four published doors. Each has its own process page — joining at 4+ / 7+ / 11+ / 16+. Read the one that matches the age. Across all of them the school says: complete the online application, attend an assessment or interview, expect high demand.
Application fee: £210 including VAT for all entry points. Tests sat abroad, by agreement with Admissions, are £420 including VAT.
Bursaries: means-tested, at 7+, 11+ and 16+, and the school says they can cover up to 100% of fees throughout the child’s time at Highgate. The application is the same as other candidates, plus a financial assessment. We will not invent an income cap.
Occasional in-year places: register interest; do not assume a Year 8 chair exists.
Money, as the school printed it for 2026–27
Figures below are inclusive of VAT, as the school labels the table. The fee covers tuition, books, stationery, compulsory fieldwork and day visits in curricular time.

Obligatory lunch, not subject to VAT: £369 per term.
Deposits on acceptance, retained until the pupil leaves: £4,000 for Pre-Prep, Junior and Senior entry; £5,000 at Sixth Form.
Public-examination charges are billed as a supplemental, at the boards’ rates, without VAT. Music: £45.24 for 35 minutes, £64.68 for 50 minutes, £38.76 for a Pre-Prep 30-minute lesson, all including VAT. Instrument hire is extra. Lessons are billed pro rata in arrears. Half a term’s notice (five academic weeks) to cancel; 48 hours to reschedule one lesson.
A first-year senior place is not “about £33,000.” It is application + £4,000 deposit + three terms + three lunches + exams in the later years. Do the sum on the live fees page.
What to ask on the stairs
Ask which N6 door this child would use at 8:15, and which at 16. Ask whether you are a 7+ family or an 11+ family — they are not the same race. Ask how a bursary file is read before you pay £210. Ask to see Dyne House if sixth form is the point. Walk a west-London girls’ house or a south-London mixed house the same week if the commute is still undecided.
What we are not claiming
We are not ranking Highgate against Westminster or Alleyn’s. We are not inventing a 2027 closing date the entry pages keep on their own calendars. Read the current fees and the entry page for this age before you treat Highgate village as one building. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
