Alleyn’s School, the mixed day house in Dulwich

A co-educational day school on Townley Road, four to eighteen. Same Dulwich neighbourhood as the College, not the same gate. Registration for 2027 opens 1 September 2026 and closes at midday on 13 November for 11+.

Alleyn’s School is a co-educational independent day school on Townley Road, Dulwich, London SE22 8SU. The school’s own line: it educates pupils aged 4–18 across a Senior School and two junior houses — Alleyn’s Junior School and Alleyn’s Oakfield. Company number 09401357. Registered charity 1161864. Switchboard 020 8557 1500.

Do not confuse this door with Dulwich College on Dulwich Common. Edward Alleyn’s name sits on both. The College is a boys’ house with boarding from Year 9. Alleyn’s is mixed, day only, and has been telling the “50 years of co-ed” story on its own site. Walk both in one south-London week if that is your map. They are not a pair of medals. They are different Tuesdays.

The useful questions are: Do you want a mixed day house or a boys’ campus with a boarding corridor? Can you live with Townley Road at 7:40 in January? And will you register in the autumn of 2026 for a 2027 Year 7?

Who it is for

Families who want a south-London independent that is mixed from the junior years through sixth form. Families who can sit a January assessment without the ISEB Common Pre-Test — Alleyn’s says that test does not form part of its 11+ process. Families who may need a means-tested bursary; the school says assistance can cover the full fee.

It will not board anyone. If you need a visa-sponsored international, this is the wrong climate. If you need a boys-only senior house, walk the College.

The campus you can actually picture

Townley Road, Dulwich. Junior School and Oakfield are separate junior doors — Oakfield has its own fees page for now. The school says that from 2028–29, Oakfield fees will match Alleyn’s Junior School. Ask which junior site a four-year-old would actually attend.

Ask to see Year 7 and Year 12, not only the hall. Time the bus from the street you will actually live on. Dulwich is a village in the brochure and a South Circular in the rain.

How the years are organised

Junior schools (4–11). Alleyn’s Junior School and Alleyn’s Oakfield. Entry points the 2027 registration banner names include 4+, 7+ and 9+ as well as 11+ and 16+.

Senior School (11–16). About 150 Year 7 places. The 11+ page says two thirds of those children join from a wide spread of state and independent schools; the rest come up from Alleyn’s Junior School.

Sixth form (16–18). Separate 16+ process and scholarships. The admissions banner current when we researched said 2027–28 registration closes at midday on Friday 16 October for 16+. Confirm the live page; banners move.

GCSE and A-level live here, not the IB. If the leaving paper needs to travel as an IB Diploma, walk Southbank the same week.

How a child actually gets in

11+ for September 2027, as the school printed it:

Step Date the school printed
Registration opens Tuesday 1 September 2026
11+ open afternoons Wednesday 30 September and Wednesday 14 October 2026
Taster afternoon Friday 2 October 2026
11+ & 16+ open morning Saturday 3 October 2026
Music department open day (potential 11+ music scholars) Wednesday 21 October 2026
Registration closes Friday 13 November 2026, midday
Girls’ sports scholarship assessment Monday 30 November 2026
Boys’ sports scholarship assessment Monday 7 December 2026
Art / D&T scholarship submissions Monday 4 January 2027
Entrance examinations (overseas) Thursday 7 January 2027
Entrance examinations Friday 8 January 2027

All candidates except those based overseas attend Alleyn’s in early January for written papers in Reasoning, English and Maths. Children whose results and school report suggest they will flourish inside and outside the classroom are invited to a group activity and a one-to-one interview. The 11+ registrar is on the admissions pages. Email them rather than guessing a late file.

Registration fee: £225 plus VAT, or £375 plus VAT for overseas applicants. Not payable if the child qualifies for the Pupil Premium or the family receives Universal Credit — written evidence required. The school will still consider a child who cannot afford the fees; mark the bursary at registration and complete the Bursar’s form.

A deposit is payable on acceptance and returns when the pupil leaves. The fees FAQ does not print the deposit figure in the extract we read. Ask admissions. We will not invent it.

Money, as the school printed it for 2026–27

Senior School Junior School
Termly fee, excluding VAT £9,025 £8,055
Yearly fee, excluding VAT £27,075 £24,165
Yearly fee, including VAT £32,490 £28,998

Lunches are not included. Lunches are compulsory in the Junior School and charged termly. A personal classroom device, uniform and trips are extra. Most co-curricular activities are included. There is no sibling discount. There is an advance-payment scheme with a discount for a minimum of three years — ask the Fees Office at fees@alleyns.org.uk.

Fees are payable termly in advance by Direct Debit and are reviewed annually. Late payment can attract penalties or interest — the FAQ says yes, without printing a rate we will invent.

A first-year senior place is not “about £32,500.” It is registration + deposit + three VAT-inclusive terms + lunch + the device. Do the sum on the live fees page.

What to ask on the stairs

Ask which junior house a younger sibling would join, and whether Oakfield’s fee alignment in 2028–29 changes your plan. Ask how a state-primary child actually lands in the two-thirds of new Year 7s. Ask whether a bursary file is realistic before you pay the overseas registration fee. Walk Dulwich College the same week if a boys’ house or a boarding bed is also on the list.

What we are not claiming

We are not ranking Alleyn’s against the College or against Highgate. We are not inventing a deposit figure or a 2028–29 Oakfield number. Read the current fees and 11+ pages before you treat November midday as folklore. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
