European School The Hague is a co-educational day school on two campuses in The Hague. Official site europeanschoolthehague.nl. Switchboard +31 70 700 1600. Admissions: admissions@eshthehague.nl.

It is not the International School of The Hague in Kijkduin, not the American School of The Hague in Wassenaar, and not the British School in the Netherlands. It is an Accredited European School, not one of the thirteen traditional schools on the Secretary-General’s list. The official locations list sits with the Board of Governors.

The about page says the school was established in 2012 to educate children of employees of European Union institutions, became an Accredited European School that same year, and is administered and partly financed by the Dutch national education system. It follows the European Schools curriculum through Early Years, Primary and Secondary, ending in the European Baccalaureate. It belongs to the Rijnlands Lyceum foundation — the same foundation as ISH. Same foundation is not the same Tuesday.

The useful questions are: Is this child Category I or Category III? Which language section will they actually sit in? And have you added lunch-time supervision — €315 — because it sits beside the annual line?

Who it is for

Families who need a European Schools week in The Hague, with a section language that is not automatically English, and a leaving paper that is the Baccalaureate, not IB.

Category I children — the admissions page lists reserved places for employees of named EU institutions and agencies, among them the Commission, Parliament, ECB, EIB, Eurojust, Europol, EPO, ESA-ESTEC, EUSPA, EMA and Frontex — have a reserved place.

Category III is everyone else, and only if they meet the school’s own eligibility sentences: a nationality other than Dutch, with a parent working in the Netherlands or the border area on a temporary basis; or Dutch nationality after two or more years of education abroad because a parent worked abroad for a limited time; or Dutch nationality where an employer confirms in writing that a parent will work abroad for at least two years within two years of admission, and the child will live with that parent.

It will not suit a family hunting a subsidised IB in Kijkduin, a Wassenaar American diploma, or a municipal basisschool that already knows the street. Walk those if that is the climate.

The campus you can actually picture

Primary and Early Years — Houtrustweg 2, 2566 HA Den Haag. The primary page says the house opened in 2012, that Early Years is a cycle of 2–2.5 years then five years of Primary, and that it currently educates over 800 children from more than 57 nationalities. Early Years, the early-years page says, begins at 4, is multi-age 4 to 6, then P1.

Secondary — Oostduinlaan 50, 2596 JP Den Haag, in the historic Aloysius building. Observation cycle, pre-orientation, orientation, then the Baccalaureate. Language sections sit on the official language-structure pages. We will not invent which section has a chair this year.

It is a day school. There is no boarding house. A bus exists; it is billed separately.

How a child actually gets in

Read Category I or Category III first. Then OpenApply. The checklist asks for a passport, two years of reports, SEN or medical papers if any, and — for Category I — a statement from the European institution confirming that status. A group information session on one or both campuses, or an individual visit after a Registration of Interest form. Write admissions. We will not invent a registration-fee figure the public fees page does not print, and we will not invent a waitlist.

Amounts are invoiced per pupil for a full school year. The page also points to a separate ESH Provisions Document for the complete obligations.

Not included, the page says: laptop hire or purchase, voluntary residential trips, canteen, bus, after-school activities.

If you start mid-year, the same page prints a percentage of the annual fee: August and September 100%, then 90 / 80 / 70 / 60 / 50 / 40 / 30 / 20 through May, and 10% in June and July.

What we are not claiming

We are not ranking ESH against ISH or the BSN. We are not calling two campuses one commute. We are not inventing a registration fee. We are not treating “Accredited” as a traditional Type I school. We are not inventing which language section is open.

Stairs questions

Ask whether this child is Category I or Category III, and read the eligibility sentences if they are III. Ask which section language they would actually sit in on Houtrustweg, and again on Oostduinlaan. Add the €315 lunch line before you compare the annual figure to Kijkduin.

Time Houtrustweg and Oostduinlaan on the same wet Tuesday. They are not one gate.
