The American School of The Hague is a not-for-profit day school in Wassenaar, serving families who work in The Hague and the wider Randstad. The main campus is Rijksstraatweg 200, 2241 BX. It is not a boarding school. If the posting has not found a house, ASH will not absorb the child.

Ages are 3–18, Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Placement uses educational background and age on 1 October. The admissions page points to a Student Placement Guide in the FAQ and a Grade Level Equivalents chart. Use those, not a friend’s memory of a British year.

ASH says it is unique in the Netherlands in offering both the IB Diploma and College Board AP, with open enrolment for both, plus its own NEASC-accredited university-preparatory diploma. Elementary, middle and high school pages all name NEASC.

The useful questions are local. Can this child work in English? Do you want the Dual Language Pathway in Kindergarten and Grade 1 — the only years it currently runs? Can you pay the one-time enrolment fee as well as the tuition? And do you understand that Special Education is a second tuition line on top of the grade fee?

Who it is for

ASH is independent and not-for-profit; the admissions page says revenue is reinvested in learning. Admissions Director Laura Romains and Admissions Officer Haley Pratt are the names on that page.

It is a school for internationally mobile families around the International Zone, embassies, courts and companies, and for families who want an American high-school diploma with a choice of IB or AP. The FAQ list asks, bluntly, “Is the ASH community mainly American?” Ask that on the tour. We are not inventing a nationality mix the public extract did not print.

Applications are year-round. Mid-year arrivals are normal in this corridor. Each file gets a personalised review: confirm eligibility, apply, upload documents, then a decision and enrolment confirmation.

The FAQ also asks whether a child can apply without English, whether ASH supports neurodivergent learners, whether there is a discount or scholarship, how large a class is, and whether there is a uniform. The public headings are there; the extractable answers were thin. Ask those questions in writing and keep the reply. The student-support page is clearer than the FAQ extract: EAL for Grades 1–12, Learning Support for Grades 1–12 through an MTSS model, and a separate Special Education programme for formally identified disabilities, in a small-class setting, with an extra fee.

The campus you can actually picture

Two sites in Wassenaar. Early Childhood is a short drive from the main campus, not a different town. Wassenaar is dunes, villas, and a school-run from Den Haag, Leiden, Voorburg, Voorschoten. The name “The Hague” is the labour market. The playground is Wassenaar.

The high-school page talks about facilities for science, arts and athletics. The homepage talks about STEM (robotics, coding, engineering), musical theatre, band, strings, Fine Arts Day, and performances that have included Disneyland Paris. Middle School electives named: Orchestra, Band, Choir, Robotics, Coding, Design Technology, Home Economics, Drama, Visual Arts.

Ask to see an ordinary Grade 4 classroom and the ECC building, not only Fine Arts Day. Ask how Grade 1 actually moves between specialist rooms.

How the day is organised

Early Childhood, Deijlerweg. Pre-Kindergarten I and II, from age 3. This is the building with the ECC bus.

Elementary, main campus. Five days a week. Homeroom for Language Arts, Maths, Science, Social Studies. Specialists for Dutch, music, STEM and more. The Dutch–English Dual Language Pathway is currently Kindergarten and Grade 1 only. Families who want local roots and a bilingual start should ask whether it continues upward in later years — the public sentence stops at Grade 1.

Middle School. Core: Language Arts, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Science, Social Studies, PE and Health, plus the electives above. The page talks about classroom, experiential, project-based and fieldwork learning.

High School. Everyone works toward the ASH High School Diploma. Then a choice:

• IB Diploma — two years, six subjects, Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, CAS. The school talks about “highest IB scores in The Hague region.” That is the school talking.
• AP — one-year college-level courses. ASH says it is the only school in the Netherlands offering AP. Most students take 3–6 AP courses over two years, plus electives.

Open enrolment means the school encourages students to reach for the programme they want. Foundations courses in Grades 9–10 support language and literature, and an EAP track sits beside social studies for students who need more academic English before IB or AP. Future IB students are “strongly advised” to take their home language as Language A, which can lead to a bilingual diploma. Many then take English B Higher Level.

The Class of 2026 news post celebrates “exceptional” AP and IB results. Ask the high-school office for the current averages if you need them in writing.

Languages, which is half the Hague question

Instruction is in English. Dutch is a specialist subject in elementary. The Dual Language Pathway is a deeper bilingual offer, K and Grade 1 only for now.

EAL in Grades 1–12 is targeted instruction, in partnership with families. If your child has no English, ask admissions — the FAQ heading exists for a reason — and ask whether PK is more flexible than Grade 6.

Host-country Dutch is the language of the toko and the beach. A child can live in Wassenaar for six years and still need a parent for the gemeente website. Ask how many hours of Dutch a Grade 3 newcomer actually gets.

How a child actually gets in

Apply online, year-round. Confirm eligibility first if you have a complicated file. Placement is by background and age on 1 October.

We did not extract a full document checklist from the how-to-apply page. Ask admissions for the live list and keep it. Do not hide learning or language needs; the support page is built on identified need and partnership.

The K–12 enrolment fee is split: €2,500 within 30 days of the decision, the rest invoiced with tuition and capital fees. An additional entry / capital line of €4,810 appeared on the official 2026–27 table. Confirm the exact label on the live page — we are not merging it into tuition.

Special Education Programme: €24,300 a year plus the regular grade tuition. That is not a small extra. Read it twice.

The tuition page also prints mid-year proration bands (including an April enrolment note). Use the live table if you are arriving in winter.

A first-year Grade 6, without Special Education, is application + K–12 enrolment + tuition — €280 + €7,115 + €27,150 = €34,545 — before the capital line, the bus, and lunches. If the €4,810 capital/entry line applies on top, add it. We are not inventing a lunch price.

The FAQ asks about discounts and scholarships. Ask. We are not printing a sibling percentage the extractable pages did not give.

Leaving certificates

The ASH High School Diploma is the NEASC paper every high-school graduate earns.

The IB Diploma is the two-year holistic route.

AP is modular: exams, possible college credit, chosen by interest.

Students can mix in the sense that the campus offers both programmes; the high-school page describes choosing AP or IB as the additional qualification. Confirm with counselling whether a mixed package is actually timetabled for this child.

Dutch university admission has its own diploma-recognition rules. If an NVAO-recognised Dutch bachelor is possible, ask the counsellor how an ASH diploma plus IB or AP is presented, not how a friend did it in 2019.

Support

Learning Support (MTSS, Grades 1–12), EAL (Grades 1–12), Special Education (identified disabilities, modified curriculum, life skills, extra fee), plus occupational and other therapists named on the support page. Bring current reports. Agree the level — and the €24,300 question — before you sign.

ASH “warmly welcomes” students with identified learning differences if it has the resources. That last clause is the one to test in the room.

What to ask on the stairs

Ask whether your grade has a waiting pool. Ask how large a class actually is — the FAQ heading exists because parents ask. Ask whether Dual Language is still K–1 only. Ask how many Grade 11s are on IB versus AP. Ask whether EAL would apply. Ask whether Special Education would apply, and what that second tuition line does to a two-child budget. Ask what happens if the posting ends in March. Ask to see the ECC and a Grade 9 corridor.

Drive Rijksstraatweg at 07:30. Wassenaar is beautiful and slow when the school run hits the canal bridges.

What we are not claiming

We are not saying ASH is the best school in the Hague region. We are not guessing enrolment. We are not inventing a class-size number. We are not treating “highest IB scores in the region” as your child’s forecast.

Read the tuition page and write to admissions before you give notice on a house in another country. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
