Bavarian International School is a co-educational IB day school run as Bavarian International School gAG, a non-profit. Head of School and Executive Board: Dr Chrissie Sorenson. Two working addresses the imprint prints: Hauptstraße 1, 85778 Haimhausen (Schloss Haimhausen — GPS also names Dorfstraße 30) and Leopoldstraße 208, 80804 Munich (City Campus). This is not Munich International School at Schloss Buchhof in Starnberg. They share an IB language and almost no January bus. Families who walk one in a Munich week should walk the other, then ask which Landkreis they can actually live in.
The useful questions are: Will this child sit primary on Leopoldstraße or in Haimhausen? Can you drive or bus to the Schloss at 7:40 in January? And can you pay a three-year entrance fee as well as the annual band?
The apply page is blunt about founding purpose. BIS was founded first as a school for a globally mobile community. When places are tight, enrolment priority is: 1. children of expat families, 2. siblings of current BIS families, 3. local German families. The school will not invent a waitlist length. It says it cannot make binding timeframes.
At least one parent must be a legal resident in Munich or the surrounding area and live there for the whole enrolment — that sentence is in the admissions brochure. This is a day school. There is no boarding house.
It will suit a family that wants English-medium IB in the Munich region and can live with a north-of-city secondary campus. It will not suit a family hunting the Starnberg lake castle, or a Gymnasium Abitur on this site.
City Campus — Leopoldstraße 208, Schwabing. Primary, including early childhood. The school built it so city children would not have to ride to Haimhausen for the first years.
Haimhausen Campus — Schloss Haimhausen, about ten kilometres north of Munich. Primary and all of secondary. A €25 million Creativity & Innovation Centre is under construction here; the admissions page says opening winter 2026–27. Ask what is actually open on the Tuesday you visit.
Ask to see this child’s year group, not only the Schloss. Time the commute from the flat you will actually rent. Transportation is a published extra on a separate schedule, ordered after a signed 2026–27 bus contract, for a complete school year only.
IB World School. Primary pages exist for City Campus and Haimhausen. Secondary is Haimhausen. The prospectus invoices IB Diploma and IB Career-related Programme examination costs separately; integrated IBCP courses are invoiced separately. Confirm PYP / MYP / DP / CP language on the current academic pages. We will not invent which campus holds which programme beyond what the nav already names.
Primary uses school-provided IT devices. Grades 6–12 bring a laptop to a specification the school publishes separately.
Mobile phones are prohibited at BIS, on the admissions copy.
Applications are year-round. Rolling start if a place exists. Decision goal: 10 working days after a complete file, longer if learning-support information is needed or during holidays.
Five steps the apply page names: enquire; visit (or not — you may apply without a tour); apply; decision; enrolment. Application includes four pieces: submit the form; pay €200 non-refundable; testing and screening; Admissions Committee review.
EC2–Grade 5 may be invited for one or more trial “guest” days, plus a German-language screening for German-speaking students. Grades 6–12 may sit an online English placement test and a spontaneous writing task, then an interview (video allowed for long-distance applicants).
A place is confirmed only after the file is complete, the committee approves, the contract is signed, and fees have been received.
Fee Reduction (Grundgesetz art. 7 sec. 4 language) exists for self-paying families whose main residence is in Germany — Grades 1–12, on tuition and the entrance fee. Ask the Business Office. Scholarships through Friends of BIS e.V. include a Dr Chrissie Sorenson award for Grades 9–12 starting 2026–27, for permanent residents in Germany who can show need. Students already at BIS are not eligible. Confirm the live scholarship deadline; those dates move.

The entrance fee is non-refundable. The schedule in force in the child’s first year stays with that child. It pays for capital development.

Two-term option: 102% (65% on 15 July 2026, 37% on 15 January 2027), EU direct debit only, not for company payers. Monthly option: 104%, ten instalments 15 July 2026–15 April 2027, EU direct debit, 4% admin on tuition. Company payers do not get those splits.
Sibling reduction on tuition and entrance fee only, for families who enrolled from 2019/20: third sibling −10%, fourth −15%. Older discount rules remain for families enrolled since 2018/19 or earlier. Registration, transport and extras are not discounted.
Transport, lunch, after-school sport, field trips, calculators, and IB exam fees are extra. Late payment: 1% per month. Withdrawal notice: six weeks in writing. No child is admitted to class until fees due are paid.
A first-year Grade 6 place is not “about €21,460.” It is application + registration + year-1 entrance + the annual band + the bus if you need it. Do the sum on the live prospectus.
Ask which campus this child would actually stand in on a wet Tuesday. Ask how a city-primary child moves to Haimhausen at Grade 6. Ask whether you are an expat, a sibling, or a local file before you treat a January start as likely. Walk MIS the same week. Sit in the January traffic.
We are not ranking BIS against MIS. We are not inventing a waitlist or a 2027–28 euro. Read the current prospectus and apply pages before you sign a Haimhausen lease. This is a map. The school still has to be the right Tuesday.
