The American Overseas School of Rome is a co-educational, not-for-profit, non-denominational American international day school. The official site is aosr.org. The school’s own privacy notice prints the registered address as Via Cassia 811, 00189 Rome. Admissions admissions@aosr.org. The admissions pages say +39 06 33438300. Founded in 1947. The home page calls it Rome’s only non-profit independent American Pre-K–12 international school.
The campus page puts it on ancient Via Cassia, in a residential area of North Rome, surrounded by a nature reserve: 2.5 hectares (about 6 acres), a historic villa, gymnasium, fields, a performing-arts space, labs, a cafeteria, an edible garden, an outdoor amphitheatre. Ask to see this child’s year, not only the pines.
This is not St. Stephen’s on the Aventine — a four-year high school with boarding beds. It is not St George’s — a British through-school with a Vatican-side junior. AOSR is an American through-campus on the same Cassia story as St George’s senior site, and almost no Tuesday. Families who walk one Roman week should walk all three, then a paritaria if they might stay.
The useful questions are: Do you want a US diploma with AP and IB on the same campus? Can you live with a North-Rome commute? And have you added the €5,500 capital assessment to the first-year sum?
Families who want English-medium American schooling in Rome from age 3 through Grade 12, and who can accept a day school. There is no boarding house.
The admissions page says 70% of families are expat internationals; the home page also prints 30% Italian / 70% international. Treat those as school-printed snapshots. Nationalities: the admissions table says 60; other official copy says 50+ or 55. We will not pick a medal number.
It will not suit a family hunting an Aventine boarding corridor, or a British IGCSE week. If you need the French Bac, walk Chateaubriand.
The school says it welcomes mild to moderate learning difficulties with documentation, and EAL (included in tuition). That is the school’s sentence. Ask what “mild to moderate” means for this child.
We will not repeat the admissions page’s “most prestigious” marketing as our ranking. It is a house on the Cassia. Walk it.
North Rome, not the centro. Six acres the school is proud of. The glance page talks about a coffee bar, Friday BBQs at a Booster Bar, study under pine trees. That is atmosphere. Time the Via Cassia at 7:40 in January. St George’s senior campus is also on this road. They are not the same gate.
The school runs about 22 private bus routes — Prati, Parioli, Vigna Clara, Trastevere, parts of the historic centre. Younger children, the page says, have monitors on board. Extra late bus at 17:15 for after-school, if the coordinator confirms.
Pre-K3 through Grade 12. High school is a dual pathway: Advanced Placement and the IB Diploma, under an American diploma. Accreditation the admissions table names: MSA and CIS. The school says it was the first in Italy to offer both IB and AP. Confirm the live diploma page if that sentence matters to a university file.
The home page prints 20+ AP courses and a 92% AP pass rate in 2026. That is one number the school published, not a forecast.
Lunch: complimentary PK–Grade 3. From Grade 4, cafeteria is à la carte. Tuition includes textbooks, college counselling, lab materials, EAL, and learning support for documented mild learning disabilities. External exams, after-school activities, and most cafeteria lines are extra.
Rolling. The school recommends January or February for a September start because space is limited, and still reviews files year-round. Mid-year entry is case-by-case.

A first-year Grade 6 place is not “about €24,200.” It is capital + registration + the annual band + the bus if you need it. Do the sum on the live page.
Ask whether this sixteen-year-old is an AP Tuesday, an IB Tuesday, or both. Ask how a mid-year arrival whose English is still tired is placed. Ask which of the 22 buses actually reaches the flat you will rent. Walk St George’s and St. Stephen’s in the same week.
We are not ranking AOSR as Rome’s best international. We are not inventing a waitlist year. We are not treating a 2026 AP pass rate as your child’s result. Read the current fees and OpenApply pages before you sign a Cassia lease. This is a map. The school still has the file.
