This is not VIS and not AMADEUS. It is Theresianum — a Stiftung Gymnasium in the 4th with day care and an Internat. The Internat page prints €1,455 a month for EU citizens in 2026/27, ten times a year. The Gymnasium costs page still prints 2025/26 for day care. The leaving paper is the Matura.

It is co-ed. It is day and boarding. The Gymnasium page: ganztägige Privatschule mit Öffentlichkeitsrecht — a private school with public status — and integrated day care through the years, or the Internat.

It is not Vienna International School. It is not AIS Vienna. It is not Danube International School. It is not AMADEUS Vienna. The 4th is not the 22nd. Time Favoritenstrasse from the flat you will actually rent.

The useful questions are Austrian. Do you want the Matura, not the IB? Can this child sit a German interview? And do you understand that the Internat page prints 2026/27 euros while the Gymnasium costs page still prints 2025/26 for day care?

Who it is for

Families who want an Austrian Gymnasium in the city, with a language or science emphasis the school names, and who can live with German as the working language. Boarding is a Viennese bed in the 4th, not a British Sunday novel.

The home page: a continuous path from kindergarten at 18 months through Volksschule to Gymnasium at 18. Maria Theresa’s foundation letter is the school’s own compass. The Gymnasium page: almost 300 years, language emphasis and a science emphasis, verschränkter Unterricht in parts of the day.

It will not suit a family who need English IB from three, or a rolling international file in August. Walk VIS or AMADEUS if that is the climate. They share a city and almost no Monday.

The campus you can actually picture

Favoritenstrasse, Wieden, U1 Taubstummengasse / Mayerhofgasse exit. Tram 1, 62, or the Badner Bahn to Mayerhofgasse, then five minutes on foot. S-Bahn to Südtiroler Platz and the U1. The contact page: during term, 7:30–15:30.

The Internat page: admission from 1. Klasse together with the Gymnasium application. Mid-year entry is generally possible; write the Internatsleiter. Short stays of a few months exist when parents are abroad. Sunday evening is the honest tour if you are buying a bed.

Kindergarten and Volksschule have their own Aufnahme pages. We will not invent those fees.

How a child actually gets in

This is an Austrian application year, not OpenApply.

1. Klasse, as the Gymnasium page prints it. Excellent Volksschule reports. Very good German, spoken and written. A good impression at a personal interview. Social competence and a willingness to join the house. Early Vormerkung from the 2. Volksschulklasse can help.

Five steps on that page:

Online Vormerkung from the second year of Volksschule. You get a confirmation. Then you wait.
In the 4. Volksschulklasse, an October Elternführung — about two and a half hours, Festsaal, small-group tours, stations for the French class and the science stream. Then you decide whether to apply.
The week after, personal Anmeldung in the Sekretariat with reports and papers.
Interview in the Direktion in November/December.
A place — or not — before Christmas.

A higher class, if a seat exists: last two reports (German translation), a list of the previous school path, very good German, the language sequence the page prints — English or French from 1. Klasse, the other from 3. Klasse, Latin from 4. Klasse — very good marks, and a March/April interview.

We will not invent a waitlist.

Money, as the school prints it

Internat, 2026/27, as the Internat costs page prints it: €1,455 a month for EU citizens, ten times a year. That is the boarding figure we will quote.

The same page points to the AHS Mitteilungsblatt Schulgeld 2026/27. Open it. We could not lift a public day-care euro from that PDF into this portrait without inventing a line.

Gymnasium day care, as the Gymnasium costs page still prints it, is labelled 2025/26: Schule mit Tagesbetreuung €890 a month for EU citizens, ten times a year, including lunch and Jause; Schule mit Internat €1,419 a month including meals; processing fee €180. Those 2025/26 lines are not 2026/27. The Internat page’s 2026/27 boarding figure is already higher than that old internat line. Do not add them. Ask which Mitteilungsblatt will be on the first invoice.

Scholarships the Gymnasium page names: Maria Theresien Stiftung from 2. Klasse AHS, Freiherr von Kirchberg-Stiftung, and the Wohlfahrtsfonds der Exekutive des Bundes. Ask the Sekretariat. We will not invent an award.

Kindergarten and Volksschule have their own Aufnahme pages. We will not invent those euros.

Leaving certificates

The Austrian Matura. This is not the IB. The home page also names an Internationales Studienprogramm (ISP). Ask what paper this child would actually sit. We will not invent that programme’s fee or its diploma.

What to ask on the stairs

Ask whether this is a kindergarten file, a Volksschule file, a 1. Klasse October tour, a mid-Gymnasium seat, or an Internat bed — those are not the same Tuesday. Ask how much German a shy ten-year-old will really have by the second spring. Ask which document — the 2026/27 Internat page or the 2025/26 Gymnasium table — will be on the first invoice. Ask what lunch is when the house is not boarding. Ask what happens if the posting ends in November: this is an Austrian school year.

We are not ranking Theresianum against VIS or Schottengymnasium. We are not guessing a waitlist.
